How DutchBulls.nl Uses Instagram Comment-to-DM Automation to Grow Their Audience
We use FlowGent on our own projects before asking anyone else to. One of those projects is DutchBulls.nl — a financial education platform for Gen-Z investors in the Netherlands. This post breaks down how we use FlowGent's Instagram comment-to-DM feature to turn casual engagement into actual conversations.
What is DutchBulls?
DutchBulls.nl is a financial media platform for young investors who want to learn about stocks, crypto, ETFs, and dividends — without the hype. The site offers guides, calculators, and weekly market recaps, all focused on data over speculation.
The audience is mostly on Instagram. That's where the content gets discovered, shared, and discussed. So Instagram isn't just a channel — it's the front door.
The Problem with Instagram Engagement
Instagram engagement is noisy. You post a carousel about dividend investing, it gets comments, maybe some saves — but then what? The people who commented "interested!" or "send me this!" disappear into the feed. There's no easy way to follow up.
The options were:
- Reply to every comment manually — doesn't scale, and a public reply isn't the right place for a detailed conversation
- Put a link in bio — most people never click it
- Ignore the engagement — the worst option, but also the most common
We needed a way to move people from a public comment into a private conversation, automatically.
Comment-to-DM Automation
This is where FlowGent's comment-to-DM feature comes in. The concept is simple: someone comments a keyword on your post, and they instantly receive a DM with whatever you want to send them.
For DutchBulls, we set it up like this:
Keyword Triggers
Each post gets a trigger word. For example:
- A post about ETF basics → trigger word: ETF
- A post about dividend calculators → trigger word: DIVIDEND
- A general growth guide → trigger word: GUIDE
When someone comments with that word, FlowGent picks it up and sends a DM within seconds.
The DM Itself
The DM isn't just a link dump. We structure it as a short message with context, followed by a button linking to the relevant page on DutchBulls. Something like:
"Hey! Here's the ETF beginners guide we mentioned in the post. It covers the top 5 ETFs for Dutch investors and how to get started."
Then a button: Read the guide → links to the article on dutchbulls.nl.
Automatic Comment Replies
FlowGent also posts a reply under the original comment — something like "Check your DMs!" — so other followers see the interaction and are encouraged to comment the keyword too. We set up multiple reply variations so it doesn't look robotic.
AI-Powered Follow-Up
Here's where it gets interesting. After the initial DM, the FlowGent AI agent stays active in that conversation. If the person replies with a question — "Which broker do you recommend?" or "Is this ETF available on DEGIRO?" — the agent responds using DutchBulls' content library. It becomes a real conversation, not just a one-way broadcast.
How It Works in Practice
Here's a real scenario:
- DutchBulls posts a carousel: "5 dividend stocks for beginners — comment DIVIDEND for the full breakdown"
- A follower comments: DIVIDEND
- Within seconds, they get a DM with a personalized message and a link to the dividend guide on DutchBulls
- Under their comment, FlowGent replies: "Sent you a message! Check your DMs"
- The follower clicks through, reads the guide, maybe asks a follow-up question in DMs
- The AI agent answers from DutchBulls' content — no manual work needed
The whole thing runs on autopilot. We set up the action once per post, and FlowGent handles the rest.
What Changed
Since adding comment-to-DM automation to the DutchBulls Instagram workflow:
- DMs became a real channel — instead of an empty inbox, DutchBulls now has active conversations with followers who actually want to learn
- Post engagement increased — when people see others commenting a keyword and getting something in return, they do the same. It creates a loop
- Traffic to guides went up — the DM links drive people directly to specific content, not just a generic homepage
- Less manual work — no more copy-pasting links in reply to every "send me this!" comment
The combination of instant DM delivery and AI follow-up means every comment turns into an opportunity — without anyone on the team having to be online.
Try It Yourself
If you're creating content on Instagram and want to do more with the engagement you're already getting, comment-to-DM automation is the simplest way to start.
