Instagram lead generation that runs in your DMs.
Turn comments, story replies, and DMs into email addresses, phone numbers, and booked calls. FlowGent asks the questions, tags the people who fit, and hands the warm ones to you.
Four ways Instagram leads start a conversation.
Every source ends in the same place: a DM thread where you can ask for contact details. The rule that shapes all of them is that Instagram lets a business message people who reached out first, not a cold list.
Comments on posts and Reels
You tell people to comment a keyword like PRICE or GUIDE. The comment is the opt-in, and FlowGent answers it with a private reply in their DMs. Meta allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment.
Story replies
A reply to your Story opens a conversation on its own. A story-reply flow can answer it, ask what they are after, and move them to the same capture steps as every other source.
Direct messages
People DM a word from your bio, a link, or a caption. A keyword flow answers the common ones, and an AI agent can handle open questions on the plans that include AI.
Ads that open a DM
If you run ads that send people into your DMs, their first message arrives like any other inbound DM, so the same keyword flow or agent can pick it up.
From keyword to booked call in five steps.
This is the flow most Instagram lead generation setups follow. Build it once in the FlowGent flow builder and reuse it for each offer.
Trigger: a comment, story reply, or DM
Pick the keyword that starts the flow and promote it in a Reel, caption, or Story. One keyword per offer keeps your leads easy to tell apart later.
First DM: deliver, then invite a reply
Send what you promised, then end with one question or a button. After a comment, Meta lets you send one private reply, and anything further can only go out once the person answers, within 24 hours of that answer. A reply is what keeps the conversation open.
Ask for the contact detail
A question step waits for the answer and checks its format before moving on. If the answer does not look like an email address or phone number, it asks again.
Qualify and tag
Ask one or two questions that tell you whether this is a fit, branch on the answer, and tag the person so you can find them again. Open-ended questions can go to an AI agent instead.
Book, sell, or hand over
Send the booking or checkout link to people who fit. Hand anyone who needs a human to your team, and send the lead to your own tools with an HTTP request step.
Ask for less than you think you need.
Each extra question is another chance for someone to stop replying. Start with the one detail you will act on, then add a second only when it changes what you do next.
Email address
Best for newsletters, lead magnets, and anything you deliver by email. Say what they get in return, and only ask if you will really use it.
What is the best email to send the checklist to?
Phone number
Worth asking when the next step is a call or a text, like a quote, a booking, or a delivery. Skip it for content offers.
What number should we call you on for the quote?
A qualifying choice
A fixed set of options is easier to answer than free text and easy to branch on, like budget range, goal, or timeline.
Are you looking to start this month, or later this year?
One open question
One free-text question about their situation gives you context for the first human reply and shows who is serious.
What is the main thing you want help with right now?
What FlowGent keeps, and how to get leads out.
FlowGent is built for the conversation, not as a full CRM. Here is exactly what it stores and what you can send elsewhere.
Contacts, not just chats
Everyone who sends a DM to your connected account appears on the Contacts page, with their last message, message count, and last activity, and you can search by name or username. When someone triggers a flow, FlowGent also creates a contact record for them, which is what tags and custom fields attach to.
Tags
The Add Tag step labels the contact as the flow runs, for example warm-lead or asked-about-price, so you can tell the groups apart.
Custom fields
The Set Field step saves an answer, like an email address, on the contact, and later steps in the same flow can use it.
Inbox, stages, and notes
In the inbox you can set a pipeline stage on each conversation, link it to a contact with an email and phone number, add tags and notes, and assign it to a teammate.
See the inbox featuresAlerts
A Notify step sends an in-app notification to your admins when a lead reaches a point you care about, like asking for a call.
Out to your own tools
The HTTP request step sends a GET, POST, or other request to any URL, with headers and a body that can include the answers collected so far. Point it at a webhook URL from your automation tool or your own server.
What FlowGent does not do today: it has no one-click CSV export, and no built-in connector for CRMs or spreadsheets. If you need leads in another system, the HTTP request step is the way to send them there.
Measure the steps, not just the leads.
Four numbers tell you where a capture flow loses people. We do not quote benchmark percentages because they swing too much between offers and audiences. Compare your own flow against its last version.
Reply rate
People who answered the first DM, divided by DMs sent
Low means the opening question or the promise did not land.
Capture rate
Emails or phone numbers collected, divided by people who replied
Low means you asked too early or asked for too much.
Result per post
Calls booked or sales made, grouped by the keyword that started the flow
This is the number that tells you which content to repeat.
Response to warm leads
How long a tagged lead waits for a human reply
A good lead who waits a day is a worse lead.
In FlowGent, the Analytics page charts messages received, AI replies, automation messages, and credits used per day over the last 7, 30, or 90 days, and the Contacts page shows how many people have messaged you. Capture and booking numbers come from your own tags, calendar, and sales records.
Instagram lead generation, explained.
The questions people ask before they build their first capture flow.
What is Instagram DM marketing?
Instagram DM marketing is using direct messages to start and run conversations with people who already showed interest, then guiding them to an email list, a booked call, or a purchase. On Meta's official API a business can only message someone after that person messaged it or commented, so it works as a response channel, not a broadcast list.
What should an Instagram lead capture tool do?
At minimum it should connect through the official Instagram API, start from a comment, DM, or story reply, ask for and validate contact details, store them somewhere you can find again, and let a human take over. Check how it gets data out, because some tools lock leads inside their own inbox.
Comments, DMs, or ads: which source is best?
Comment keywords usually suit organic content because the opt-in is public and clear. DMs and story replies catch people who are already curious. Ads that open a DM buy you volume, but they only pay off if the first reply and the qualifying questions are good. Start with one source and get the capture steps right before adding another.
Lead generation questions answered.
Common questions about generating and capturing leads on Instagram.
How do I generate leads on Instagram?
Give people a reason to start a conversation, like a free guide, a price list, or a quote, and a simple way to ask for it, like commenting a keyword or sending a DM. Then reply with a message that delivers it, ask for an email or phone number, ask one or two qualifying questions, and send a booking or checkout link to the people who fit.
What is an Instagram lead generation tool?
It is software that turns Instagram interactions into contact details and conversations you can follow up. In FlowGent that means comment-to-DM and keyword flows, question steps that validate email and phone, tags and custom fields, and an inbox where you or your team continue the conversation.
How do I capture an email address in an Instagram DM?
Add a question step to your flow, set it to expect an email address, and write the prompt. FlowGent checks the format and asks again if the answer is not valid. Then use a Set Field step to save it on the contact, and an HTTP request step if you want to send it to your own email tool.
Can I send DMs to people who have not contacted me?
Not through Meta's official API. A business can reply to a person who messaged it, and it can send one private reply to someone who commented, within 7 days of the comment. Tools that promise cold DMs usually log in with your password or a browser extension, which is what puts an account at risk. FlowGent does not send cold outreach.
How long do I have to follow up with a lead?
After a person messages you, the standard window for replies is 24 hours from their last message. After a comment, you can send one private reply within 7 days, and further messages are only possible once the person replies. Plan the first DM so that it invites an answer.
Where do captured leads go in FlowGent?
They stay as contacts in FlowGent, with tags, notes, a pipeline stage, and any fields your flow saved. To move leads into another system, use the HTTP request step to send each lead to a URL you control. FlowGent does not have a one-click CSV export or built-in connectors for tools like HubSpot or Google Sheets today.
What results can I expect from Instagram lead generation?
It depends on your offer, your audience, and how good the first message is, so we do not quote benchmark rates. Measure your own reply rate, capture rate, and bookings per post, change one thing at a time, and keep what improves them.
How much does FlowGent cost for lead generation?
Flows, including comment-to-DM, keyword replies, question steps, and tags, start at $19 per month on the Starter plan. AI agent plans start at $49 per month. There is a 7-day free trial, so you can build your first capture flow before you pay.
