What an ig.me link does
An ig.me link is a short URL run by Meta. When someone taps https://ig.me/m/yourusername, Instagram opens a message thread with your account. If they have never messaged you, they get a fresh thread and a notice that you will see they used your link once they send a message. If they already have a thread, it simply opens. You can use it on your website, in email newsletters, in SMS or on a printed QR code.
Can you pre-fill the message?
Not according to Meta's documentation. The only things an ig.me link supports are your username and the optional ref parameter. If you have seen WhatsApp links with a ready-typed message, Instagram has no documented equivalent, so the person types their own first message.
How the ref parameter works
A link like https://ig.me/m/yourusername?ref=bio carries the tag bio. Instagram passes it to the tool connected to your account via a webhook, so the tool can tell which link started the conversation. Meta limits ref values to letters, numbers, hyphens, underscores and equals signs. The tag is invisible to your audience and has no effect unless your messaging software reads it.
