What is a WhatsApp click-to-chat link?

Click to chat is WhatsApp's way of starting a chat without saving the other person's number first. The link uses WhatsApp's own wa.me domain: https://wa.me/15551234567 opens a chat with that number in the phone app and in WhatsApp Web. It works as long as the number has an active WhatsApp account, personal or business.

WhatsApp link format: wa.me/number

Use the full phone number in international format: country code first, then the number. Leave out zeros at the start, brackets, dashes and the plus sign. https://wa.me/15551234567 is correct, https://wa.me/+001-(555)1234567 is not.

How to create a WhatsApp link with a message

Add ?text= after the number, then the URL-encoded message. Spaces become %20, so https://wa.me/15551234567?text=Hi%20there opens the chat with Hi there already typed. This tool encodes the message for you. To build a link that only carries a message, use https://wa.me/?text= and the encoded text. WhatsApp then lets the person pick a contact to send it to.

Where to use your WhatsApp link

Put it in an Instagram bio (Instagram lets you add up to five websites to your profile), a button on your website, an email signature, a newsletter, an ad or a printed flyer. If the link will be printed, turn it into a QR code so people can scan it with their phone camera.

wa.me link or WhatsApp Business short link?

A wa.me link is built from a number, so you can make one for any number you control. The WhatsApp Business app also generates a short link for your business account by itself, under Tools then Short link. On a phone with WhatsApp installed it opens a chat. In a web browser it first shows a page with your business information, where people click Continue to chat.

Group invite links are different

A group invite link (chat.whatsapp.com/...) is created inside WhatsApp from the group info screen, by group admins or, if the admins allow it, by members. A wa.me link opens a one-to-one chat, so use it for customer or contact chats, not for joining groups.

How do I create a share link on WhatsApp?

To share a message without choosing a contact, use https://wa.me/?text= followed by the URL-encoded message. After someone opens it, WhatsApp shows a list of contacts they can send the message to. This generator needs a number, so for a message-only share link, add ?text= and the encoded message to https://wa.me/ yourself.

Can I add a pre-filled message to a WhatsApp link?

Yes. Type the message in the optional field and it is added to the link as the text parameter. When someone opens the link, WhatsApp shows your message in the chat box, ready to send. They can edit it first, and nothing is sent until they tap send.

Why is my WhatsApp link not working?

Check the number first. WhatsApp says to use the full number in international format and to leave out zeroes, brackets and dashes, so https://wa.me/15551234567 is right and https://wa.me/+001-(555)1234567 is not. The number also has to belong to an active WhatsApp account. Test the link on your phone and in WhatsApp Web before you share it.

Can I put a WhatsApp link in my Instagram bio?

Yes. Add your wa.me link as a website on your profile. Instagram's help center says you can add up to five websites by going to Edit profile and selecting Links. Anyone who taps it on a phone with WhatsApp opens a chat with your number, so only use a number you are happy to make public.

wa.me is WhatsApp's own link domain. wa.link is a separate short-link service run by another company. wa.me links are already short. If you want a branded or trackable link you need a link shortener or a service that redirects, which can add click counts but means your link depends on that service.

Is there an official Chat on WhatsApp button for my website?

Yes. WhatsApp's help center offers a Chat on WhatsApp button in green and white, in three sizes. You put the button image inside a link to your wa.me URL, and WhatsApp recommends using the button unchanged. It is only available in English. Good places for it are contact pages, landing pages and the mobile version of your site.

Can I turn my WhatsApp link into a QR code?
