The preview is a rough sketch, not WhatsApp itself. The symbols in your text are what WhatsApp turns into formatting, and its exact rules are not published, so send the message to yourself first.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent, stored or connected to your WhatsApp account.

How to use the WhatsApp text formatter

  1. Step 1

    Type or paste your message

Write it in the box. The preview shows roughly how the message looks in a chat bubble.

  2. Step 2

Select words and pick a style

Highlight the words you want and tap Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, Monospace, a list or a quote. With nothing selected, the button formats the whole message.

  3. Step 3

    Copy and paste into WhatsApp

Tap Copy message and paste it into a chat. Send it to yourself first to check how it looks on your phone.

WhatsApp formatting cheat sheet

These are the styles WhatsApp's Help Center lists for messages. Put the symbols directly against the text, with no space between a symbol and the word it wraps.

StyleType thisShows as
Bold*hello*hello
Italic_hello_hello
Strikethrough~hello~hello
Monospace```hello```hello
Inline code`hello`hello
Bulleted list- hello (or * hello)A bullet before each line
Numbered list1. helloA number before each line
Quote> helloA quote bar beside the line

How to bold, italic or strikethrough text in WhatsApp without a tool

For a quick bit of formatting you do not need a tool. Type the symbols yourself, or select the text and let the app add them for you. The Help Center describes these shortcuts:

  • iPhone: double tap the text you typed, tap Format, then choose Bold, Italic, Strikethrough or Monospace.
  • Android: tap and hold the text, tap the three dots (More), then choose Bold, Italic, Strikethrough or Monospace.
  • WhatsApp Web and desktop: double click the text, then choose Bold, Italic, Strikethrough or Inline code.

This formatter is handy when you are preparing a longer message, a list or a template you will reuse. You get a preview, a style is applied to every line you select, spaces stay outside the symbols, and tapping a button a second time removes the style. To send the same message from a link or QR code, paste it into our WhatsApp link generator, which handles the URL encoding for you.

Can you combine styles or underline text?

The Help Center describes each style on its own and does not cover combining them. People commonly wrap one pair of symbols inside another, for example *_bold and italic_*, and the preview here follows that idea. Whether a nested style shows up is up to WhatsApp, so check it in a chat with yourself.

The Help Center article on formatting lists no underline, spoiler or font-size option either. If a site offers underlined or tiny WhatsApp text, it is using special Unicode characters, the same trick as the fonts mode above.

Why is WhatsApp formatting not working?

When a message stays plain, one of these is usually the reason:

  • A space inside the symbols. * hello* stays as typed, *hello* works.
  • Only one side, or two different symbols. Each style needs the same symbol before and after the text.
  • Lookalike characters. Asterisks, tildes or backticks pasted from a document or website can be different characters. Retype them in WhatsApp.
  • A pair split across lines. The Help Center examples keep each pair on one line, so do the same.
  • An older app. Lists, quotes and inline code came later than bold, italic and strikethrough. If they stay plain, update WhatsApp and try again.

WhatsApp does not publish its exact parsing rules, so treat any preview, ours included, as a close sketch and not a promise.

WhatsApp fonts: what they are and what they cost you

The fonts mode swaps normal letters for Unicode characters that look like bold, script, old English, small caps or circled letters. Because they are text, you can paste them into a chat. They are not fonts, so WhatsApp is not changing how it draws your message.

There is a price. A phone that lacks a character shows an empty box, a screen reader may read each letter by its Unicode name or skip it, and a contact searching for a word will not find it if you wrote it in styled letters. Keep names, prices and anything people need to read aloud or search for in plain text, and use styled letters for a short decorative phrase. The same applies to our Instagram fonts generator.

WhatsApp formatting: your questions answered

How do I format text in WhatsApp?

Put symbols directly around your words: _italic_, *bold*, ~strikethrough~ and ```monospace```. WhatsApp's Help Center also lists bulleted lists (- text), numbered lists (1. text), quotes (> text) and inline code (`text`). You can type the symbols yourself, use the format menu in the app, or let this formatter add them and show a preview.

How do I make text bold in WhatsApp?

Type an asterisk on both sides of the text, like *hello*, with no space between the asterisk and the word. In the app you can also select the text and use the menu. On iPhone, double tap the text, tap Format, then Bold. On Android, tap and hold the text, tap the three dots, then choose Bold.

How do I strikethrough text in WhatsApp?

Put a tilde on both sides of the text, like ~old price~. WhatsApp turns it into struck-through text. The menu works too: on iPhone double tap the text, tap Format, then Strikethrough. On Android tap and hold the text, tap the three dots, then Strikethrough. This tool does it with one button.

Can I underline text or change the font in WhatsApp?

WhatsApp's Help Center article on formatting lists no underline, spoiler or font choice. It lists bold, italic, strikethrough, monospace, lists, quotes and inline code. Sites that show underlined or fancy text swap your letters for special Unicode characters, which is what the fonts mode on this page does. They are not real fonts and can look different on other phones.

Why is my WhatsApp formatting not working?

The usual cause is a space between a symbol and the text: * hello* stays as typed, while *hello* works. Check that both sides have the same symbol, that you did not paste lookalike characters from a document, and that each pair sits on one line. If lists or quotes stay plain, update WhatsApp, because those styles came later than bold and italic.

Are WhatsApp fonts real fonts?

No. WhatsApp's formatting guide offers no font choice. The fonts mode here converts your letters into other Unicode characters that look like bold, script or old English type. They paste anywhere, but some phones show empty boxes, screen readers may read them letter by letter, and a search will not match them as normal text.

Is there a free online WhatsApp text formatter?

Yes, this one is free and needs no signup or WhatsApp login. Type your message, select words, tap a style, then copy the text and paste it into WhatsApp. It works in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere. WhatsApp applies the formatting when it reads the symbols in the message you send.
