Viewers is Instagram's count of unique accounts that saw a post, found under a post's Insights. It is what many tools call reach. Add it to also get a rate by reach.

Enter your followers and the numbers for at least one post to see your engagement rate.

How to use the engagement rate calculator

  1. Step 1

    Enter your followers

Use the follower count from around the time the posts went live. Type 12.5k or 12500, both work.

  2. Step 2

    Add your posts

Fill in likes, comments, saves and shares for up to 12 posts, or switch to averages if you already have them. Viewers is optional.

  3. Step 3

    Read both rates

The rate by followers is the one to compare with benchmarks. The rate by reach shows how well posts did with the people who saw them.

How engagement rate is calculated

The standard formula divides interactions by your audience size:

Engagement rate by followers = (likes + comments + saves + shares) / followers x 100

Swap followers for viewers and you get the rate by reach, which measures a post against the accounts that actually saw it:

Engagement rate by reach = (likes + comments + saves + shares) / viewers x 100

When you measure more than one post, this calculator averages the interactions (by followers) or the per-post rates (by reach). Some tools only count likes and comments, so the benchmark comparison in the calculator uses that narrower number to stay comparable.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

Engagement rate benchmarks depend on who is measured and how. The creator bands below come from HypeAuditor (2025), last updated August 2026. HypeAuditor calls them rough benchmarks, and it measures rate per post against views for accounts that post many Reels and against followers otherwise, so treat them as a guide and not a pass or fail mark.

Typical Instagram engagement rate by follower count, HypeAuditor
Creator sizeFollowersTypical rate
Nano1,000 to 5,000 followers4% to 5%
Micro5,000 to 50,000 followers2.5% to 3.5%
Mid-tier50,000 to 500,000 followers2% to 2.5%
Macro and mega500,000+ followers1% to 2%

Brand accounts sit far lower. Rival IQ (2025) and Socialinsider (2026) track brand pages, and their averages are well under 1%. Each source picks its accounts and defines engagement in its own way, which is why you should compare against one source at a time and not mix them.

Use the numbers to start conversations

Comments are the engagement you can answer. A common way to use them is to ask people to comment a word on a Reel and send them what they asked for by DM, which turns a public comment into a one-to-one conversation.

Reply to the people who comment

When someone comments a keyword on your post or Reel, FlowGent can send them a DM with your link or offer through the official Instagram API. Comments you already get become conversations you can follow up on.

Frequently asked questions about Instagram engagement rate

How do I calculate engagement rate on Instagram?

Add up the interactions on a post (likes, comments, saves and shares), divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. For several posts, average the interactions first. If you want to know how well a post did with the people who actually saw it, divide by viewers (reach) instead of followers.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

It depends on account size and on who is measured. HypeAuditor reports rough creator bands from about 4% to 5% for accounts with 1,000 to 5,000 followers down to 1% to 2% above 500,000 followers. Brand accounts are much lower: Rival IQ's 2025 report puts the median at 0.36% and the top 25% at about 1%. See the tables on this page for sources.

Is a 1% engagement rate good on Instagram?

For a brand account, yes, it is roughly the top quarter according to Rival IQ's 2025 data. For a creator with a few thousand followers it is below the 2.5% to 5% that HypeAuditor reports for accounts under 50,000 followers. Compare yourself to accounts of your own size and type.

Is 12% engagement on Instagram good?

It is far above every benchmark on this page, so check how it was calculated. A rate by reach is often higher than a rate by followers, and one viral post or a very small account can also push the number up. Average several posts before you draw a conclusion.

Should I use followers or reach to calculate engagement rate?

Followers is the most common basis and the easiest to compare with benchmarks. Reach (shown in Instagram Insights as Viewers) tells you how a post performed with the people who saw it, which makes it better for comparing posts to each other, because a Reel can be seen by many people who do not follow you. This calculator shows both.

Where do I find likes, comments, saves and shares?

Open a post and tap View insights. Instagram's Help Center describes Interactions as the actions people take on your content, such as likes, comments, saves and shares, and Viewers as the unique accounts that saw it. For accounts that are not yours, enter likes and comments and leave saves and shares blank.
