Instagram already has a QR code. Why make another?

Instagram has a built-in QR code for your profile. In the app, go to your profile and tap Share profile, where Instagram's help center says you can change its look with Color, Emoji or Selfie. It is quick, but it only points to your profile and offers those few styles. A custom code lets you point to a DM link, match your brand colours and export a file sized for print.

Profile QR code or DM QR code?

Use the profile code when you want followers, for example on a business card, a shop window or a menu. Use the DM code when you want a conversation: a coupon on packaging, a booking request, a product question. The DM code encodes an ig.me link, which Meta describes as a link that opens a conversation in Instagram. Meta suggests exactly this use, ig.me links with QR codes on packaging and in stores.

Tips for a code that scans

Leave the blank border around the code, which both downloads include. Print it at least around 2 cm wide, keep strong contrast, and test it on an iPhone and an Android phone, in the same lighting where people will scan it. If you put it on a screen or a video, hold it on screen long enough to scan. A QR code on a busy photo background is much harder to read than one on a plain surface, so give it a clean area of its own.
