How to split a photo into an Instagram grid

A grid is one picture cut into tiles that you post one at a time, so your profile shows the full image. Instagram shows your profile in three columns, so this tool cuts three tiles across and lets you choose one to four rows.

Upload a picture, choose Profile grid and leave the tile ratio on 3:4. Each tile is 1080 x 1440 px, so a three-row grid is a 3240 x 4320 px picture. If your image is smaller, the tool enlarges it and warns you that it may look soft. Keep faces and text away from the lines between tiles, and use Fill to trim the edges or Fit to keep the whole image on a background colour.

If you choose 4:5 or 1:1 tiles, the tool adds a little extra image to the sides of each tile. The profile grid shows a narrower crop of those posts, and the extra image makes sure the visible part still lines up. It only shows in the feed. You can upload tiles from the Instagram app or from a computer at instagram.com, where Instagram's help center says JPG and PNG files are supported.

Pinned posts take the first spots on your grid (Instagram lets you pin up to 3), so a pinned post can push new tiles out of line. Unpin them first, or pin three so they fill a whole row. After you post the tiles, preview your profile grid with your next post before you publish it, because every new post moves the whole picture along by one tile.

How to turn a panorama into a swipeable carousel

A panorama carousel is one wide image cut into equal slides, so the scene continues as people swipe. Choose Carousel splitter, pick a slide ratio and set the number of slides. The button under the slider suggests a slide count that matches the shape of your image, which keeps trimming to a minimum. As a rule of thumb, an image about three times wider than it is tall suits 4 slides at 3:4.

Instagram's help center says a single post can hold up to 20 photos and videos, and that the orientation you choose applies to every slide, so the tool uses one ratio for all of them. In the app, tap Create, then Post, then Select multiple, and choose the slides in order. You can reorder them later, but you cannot add new slides to a carousel after you share it, so check the set before you publish.

Put the part of the picture that works as a cover on slide 1. Your profile shows the first slide of a carousel with a carousel icon, and the feed shows it first too. Keep important details away from the cut lines so nothing is split in half as people swipe. For the words that go with it, the Instagram caption generator can help you draft a caption.

Grid or carousel: which one should you use?

A carousel is one post, so you share it once and likes and comments count for the whole post. Only its first slide shows on your profile, so the panorama is a reason to open the post and swipe. You can fit up to 20 slides in one post.

A grid is several separate posts, each with its own caption, likes and comments. It turns your profile into a picture, which suits a launch, a brand or a portfolio. The cost is upkeep: once you post something new, the picture moves along by one tile. Instagram announced a Reorder grid feature in June 2026 that lets you drag posts into a new order, which makes repairs easier, but a grid still takes planning.

If you want one big picture quickly, use a carousel. If you want your profile itself to look like a picture, use a grid, and post the tiles in one sitting. You can run both: a grid for the profile and a carousel for a story told over several slides.

Instagram grid and carousel sizes

Instagram's help center says it uploads photos at up to 1080 px wide, and that a photo keeps its original resolution when its aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, which is a height between 566 and 1440 px at 1080 px wide. Other ratios are cropped to fit. Every size this tool exports sits inside that range.

Instagram photo ratios and sizes at 1080 px wide
RatioSize in pxGood to know
3:41080 x 1440The tallest photo ratio in Instagram's help center. Default for the grid, because the profile grid is a tall shape.
4:51080 x 1350The classic portrait post. The profile grid shows a narrower crop of it.
1:11080 x 1080Square. Fine in the feed, but the tall grid trims its sides.
1.91:11080 x 566The widest landscape ratio Instagram keeps as it is.

Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, announced a taller profile grid in January 2025, and in May 2025 Instagram added support for 3:4 photos in single posts and carousels. We could not find the grid thumbnail ratio on a help center page, so treat 3:4 as the working figure that most guides use and check your own profile. In early 2026 Instagram also added a way to edit a post's thumbnail as it shows on your profile, so leave the default thumbnail on tiles from this tool.

Instagram grid maker and carousel splitter: common questions

How do I split a photo into a 3x3 Instagram grid?

Upload your image, choose Profile grid, set 3 rows and leave the tile ratio on 3:4. The tool cuts nine tiles at 1080 x 1440 px. Download them, then post the tile with the highest number first and tile 1 last. Instagram shows your newest post at the top left, so the picture comes together in the right order.

What size should Instagram grid tiles be?

Instagram's help center says photos keep their original resolution when the ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, at up to 1080 px wide. A 3:4 tile is 1080 x 1440 px. We could not find the profile grid thumbnail ratio on a help page, but it is a tall shape and most guides measure it at 3:4, so 3:4 tiles line up without trimming.

In what order do I post an Instagram grid?

Post the tile with the highest number first and tile 1 last, because your newest post sits at the top left. Since June 2026 you can also press and hold a post, choose Reorder grid and drag it into place. Pinned posts stay at the top, and they can push your tiles out of line, so check them before you start.

How many slides can an Instagram carousel have?

Up to 20 photos and videos in one post, according to Instagram's help center. This tool splits an image into 2 to 20 slides. All slides in a post share one orientation (square, portrait or landscape), so you cannot mix a 1:1 slide with a 3:4 one. Pick one slide ratio and use it for the whole panorama.

How do I make a seamless panorama carousel on Instagram?

Cut one wide image into equal slides at the same ratio, then add them to a single post in order. Each slide picks up exactly where the last one ends, so the picture flows as people swipe. Choose a slide count that matches the image shape: 4 slides at 3:4 suit an image about three times wider than it is tall.

Why does my grid look cropped or out of line?

The usual causes are tiles posted in the wrong order, a pinned post pushing everything along, a tile ratio other than 3:4 (4:5 and 1:1 posts are trimmed on a 3:4 grid), or a newer post shifting the whole picture by one tile. Check the order first, then pinned posts, and leave the default crop on tiles from this tool.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the image, draws each tile on a canvas and saves the files to your device. Nothing is sent to FlowGent or any other server, and the image is gone when you close or refresh the page. Files up to 50 MB and 100 megapixels are accepted, though a phone can be slower with very large ones.
