Choose an icon, a colour palette and an optional label. The preview shows the cover at story size and as a small profile circle.

  2. Step 2

    Download the PNG

Download one cover, or switch to a matching set and download every cover in one ZIP file. The files are made in your browser.

  3. Step 3

    Add it to your highlight

Get the PNG onto the device you use for Instagram, then open Edit cover on the highlight and choose it as the cover photo.

How to add or change a highlight cover on Instagram

These steps come from Instagram's help center for the iPhone and Android apps. To make a new highlight, go to your profile and tap New. If you do not see New, tap Story highlight. Select the story or stories to include and tap Next, then tap Edit cover to choose a cover photo and enter a name. Confirm with the button in the top right and the highlight appears on your profile.

To change the cover of a highlight you already have, tap and hold the highlight on your profile and tap Edit Highlight. The help center says highlights can be edited at any time to change the cover photo, name or included stories. Make the cover here first, so the PNG is ready on your phone when you open the editor.

Whether the cover can come straight from your photo library or has to be one of your stories is not spelled out in the help center. The FAQ below covers that question.

Highlight cover ideas by niche

Name each highlight after the first question a new visitor would ask. Every name below is an icon in the picker, so you can make the whole row with the matching set option.

  • Online shops: Shop, New in, Sale, Reviews, Shipping and FAQ.
  • Cafes and restaurants: Food, Coffee, Drinks, Find us, Events and Reviews.
  • Coaches and consultants: About, Results, Tips, Pricing, FAQ and Contact.
  • Fitness and health: Fitness, Health, Results, Tips, Pricing and Reviews.
  • Beauty and salons: Beauty, Hair, Jewelry, Pricing, Reviews and Find us.
  • Creators and travel: Travel, Photos, Videos, Guides, Favorites and Links.

Keep your highlights looking like one set

Instagram's announcement of the feature says highlights appear in a section below your bio, so visitors read them as one group. Choose a palette of two or three colours and use it on every cover.

Use one icon style, one size and the same label rule everywhere. In this tool that means choosing a palette, a layout and a size once, then switching to a matching set, where every cover is drawn with the same settings.

Keep text to one short word and heed the contrast warning before you download. Then look at the whole profile: write the bio with the Instagram bio generator and check how a new post sits in your grid with the Instagram post preview.

Size, crop and the circle

Instagram's help center does not publish a size for highlight covers, and we did not find one on other official Meta pages. The covers this tool makes are 1080 x 1920 pixels, the 9:16 story shape. Meta's developer documentation recommends 9:16 for story images, and Meta's design requirements for Stories ads recommend 1080 x 1920, so it is a sensible size to start from.

Instagram's guide to Stories describes highlights as round covers under your bio, so only part of a tall image is visible. The dashed circle in the preview is as wide as the image, and the dotted circle marks the area the tool keeps your artwork inside. Instagram does not document the exact crop, so check the result on the Edit cover screen and make the artwork smaller if anything touches the edge.

Instagram highlight covers: common questions

What size are Instagram highlight covers?

We could not find a highlight cover size on Instagram's help center. This tool exports 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16), the story shape that Meta's developer documentation recommends for story images, and keeps the artwork in the middle because highlights are shown as a circle. Use the dashed guide in the preview to see how much of the image the circle covers.

How do I add a cover to an Instagram highlight?

On the iPhone or Android app, go to your profile and tap New, or Story highlight if you do not see New. Select the stories to include and tap Next, then tap Edit cover to choose a cover photo and enter a name. Confirm in the top right. These are the steps in Instagram's help center.

How do I change the cover of an existing highlight?

Tap and hold the highlight on your profile, then tap Edit Highlight. Instagram's help center says a highlight can be edited at any time to change its cover photo, name or included stories. Download your new cover from this tool first, so the file is ready on your phone when you open the editor.

Do I have to post the cover to my story first?

Instagram's help center does not say. It only says you choose a cover photo under Edit cover when you create or edit a highlight. Open Edit cover in your app and see whether it lets you pick from your photo library. If it only shows stories, sharing the image to your story first is the workaround people describe, but we could not confirm it on an official page.

What is an Instagram highlight cover?

A highlight is a group of saved stories that stays on your profile under your bio, and the cover is the round image that represents it. You also give each highlight a name. Instagram describes highlights as staying on your profile until you remove them, so a clear icon helps visitors find the right one quickly.

What makes a good highlight cover?

There is no single best cover, but simple ones tend to work. Use one clear icon, strong contrast between icon and background, and the same colours and icon style across every highlight. Keep any text to one short word, because the cover is shown as a small circle. The preview shows your cover at a small profile size, so you can check it.

Is this highlight cover maker free, and are my designs uploaded?

It is free, with no account and no watermark. The cover is drawn in your browser and the PNG is created on your device, so nothing you make is uploaded to FlowGent. You choose from built-in icons, colours and a short label. There is no photo upload, so it will not place your own logo or picture.
