yourname Sunday market haul: peaches, fresh bread and the kind of tomatoes that taste like summer. We ate half of it on the walk home...

This is a mock-up made by FlowGent, not Instagram, and it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Instagram. Spacing, fonts and cropping in the real app can differ slightly.

How to preview an Instagram post

  1. Step 1

    Upload your image

Choose the image and the aspect ratio you plan to use. The file never leaves your browser.

  2. Step 2

    Add username and caption

Type your caption, set the likes and the cut-off, and try light and dark mode.

  3. Step 3

    Check feed and grid

Switch to the profile grid to see the crop, then fix the image or caption before you post.

Why preview a post before you publish

A photo that looks fine in your gallery can lose its subject to a crop, and a caption that reads well in a notes app can break in an awkward place in the feed. Previewing catches both before your followers see them.

The tool shows the feed post with your username, caption, likes and the "... more" cut-off, plus a 3-column profile grid with your image in the top-left tile. Switch between light and dark mode to check both.

Aspect ratios for Instagram feed photos

Instagram's help center says it uploads photos at up to 1080 pixels wide and keeps your photo as is when the aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 (landscape) and 3:4 (tall portrait). Anything outside that range is cropped to fit. Photos wider than 1080 pixels are resized down to 1080 and very small ones are enlarged.

The tool offers 1:1, 4:5, 3:4 and 1.91:1, which are all inside that range. Pick the ratio you plan to choose when you crop in the app and see how your image sits in the frame.

Check where your caption gets cut off

In the feed, a long caption is cut off with a "more" link, so the first lines carry the message. Put the hook, the offer or the question first, and keep line breaks where you want people to pause.

If you need help with the words, try the Instagram caption generator, and use the line break generator so your spacing survives when you paste.

Preview your profile grid

Your grid is where visitors decide whether to follow, and thumbnails are cropped to a tile. This mock-up centers your framed post in the tile so you can see what gets trimmed, and you can switch between tall and square tiles to match what your own profile shows.

As a rule, keep faces, text and products near the middle of the image so a center crop does not cut them off. Always compare with your real profile, because tile shape and spacing can change with app updates.

Posts bring comments and DMs

Once the post is live, people will comment and message you. FlowGent can reply to those comments and DMs through the official Instagram API, with comment-to-DM flows, keyword replies and human handoff in the inbox. 7-day free trial.

Instagram post preview: common questions

Can you preview a post on Instagram?

This tool is a mock-up you can use before you open the app. Upload your image, choose an aspect ratio, add a caption and username, and see the feed post and the profile grid in light or dark mode. It is not Instagram's own preview, so use the app for a final check.

Can someone see if you preview their Instagram post?

This tool only previews your own image and caption, and it all happens in your browser. It does not load anyone else's posts, and nothing you add is sent to Instagram or to anyone else.

Can you change the Instagram post preview after posting?

This tool cannot change a post that is already live. Instagram's help center has an article on adding, editing or deleting the caption of an existing post, so a caption fix can be done in the app after posting. Use the preview first to catch crops and line breaks that look wrong.

Which aspect ratios does Instagram support for photos?

According to Instagram's help center, photos keep their original resolution when the aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, for a width of 1080 pixels and a height between 566 and 1440 pixels. If the ratio is not supported, the photo is cropped to fit a supported one. The ratio options in this tool all sit inside that range.

How many characters show before 'more'?

Guides often say about 125 characters on a phone, but we could not confirm an exact number from Instagram and it can vary by device. The slider in the tool lets you set the cut-off to match what you see on your own phone.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is read by your browser and displayed on the page. It is not sent to FlowGent or any other server, and it is gone when you close or refresh the page.
