Your username is the handle people type, tag and say out loud, so readability beats cleverness. Aim for something short enough to remember after one look, and avoid stacking numbers and underscores until it looks like a password.

Keep it consistent. If your business name is taken, use the same root word on every platform and add one short qualifier, such as a role or niche word, instead of inventing a new name. Say it out loud before you commit: if you have to spell it twice, try another one.

These are patterns, not reserved handles. The examples use a placeholder name and we have not checked whether they are taken. Swap in your own name and test the result in Instagram.

Instagram's help center confirms that periods, numbers and underscores are fine to use when you need a variation of a name. The generator only outputs letters, numbers, periods and underscores.

It also plays it safe on two things the help center article we checked does not spell out: it keeps handles to 30 characters or fewer, and it never starts or ends with a period or uses two periods in a row. Treat Instagram itself as the final check when you set the username.

When the username you want belongs to someone else, Instagram suggests creating a variation by adding periods, numbers, underscores or abbreviations. Try your name plus a niche word first, then a short prefix, and use numbers last.

You can change your username later from Edit profile. Instagram's help center notes that your followers may be told about the change and that accounts that reach a lot of people can have a username change reviewed, so choose something you can live with for a while.
