Characters are counted as you see them, so an emoji or an accented letter counts once. Instagram does not publish how it counts emoji. For reference, this text is 55 UTF-16 code units and 55 UTF-8 bytes.

Where a caption may get cut off

The cut-off is about 125 characters in many guides, but Instagram does not state it and it changes with the device, the app version and line breaks. Treat it as a rough guide and put the important part first.

How to use the Instagram character counter

  1. Step 1

    Paste your text

Drop in your bio, caption or comment, or type it in the box. The counts update as you type.

  2. Step 2

    Read the limit cards

Each card shows your text against one limit and turns red when you are over. A badge tells you whether Instagram states the number or it is only commonly reported.

  3. Step 3

    Trim and re-check

Cut until every card you care about is green, and keep the most important words in the first line.

Instagram character limits at a glance

These are the limits we could confirm on Instagram and Meta pages in October 2026. We checked each one against its source, and the tool links to them.

Two limits you will see everywhere are only commonly reported: a username of 30 characters, and a comment of 2,200 characters. We show them with a different badge. We do not enforce a limit for the profile name field, because sources disagree on it and Instagram does not state it.

Instagram bio character limit

The bio limit is 150 characters. That is short enough that spaces, line breaks and emoji decide whether a sentence fits. Count everything you can see, then check the editor, which is the final judge. If you format your bio with gaps between lines, our Instagram line break generator has a bio mode that counts the spacing too.

Need the words themselves? The Instagram bio generator writes a first draft you can trim here.

Instagram caption length: the limit versus what people see

A caption can hold 2,200 characters, but few readers get that far. In the feed, long captions are cut off behind a "more" link. Guides commonly say the cut-off is around 125 characters. Instagram does not state it and it varies by device, so the preview in the tool is a rough guide, not a promise.

The practical rule is the same either way: the first line should earn the tap. Put the offer or the hook first, and the hashtags and detail after it. Remember that hashtags and @ mentions typed in a caption count as characters.

How emoji and special characters are counted

Computers count text in different ways. A family emoji looks like one character but is built from several; a styled letter from a fancy font takes more storage than a plain one. This tool counts what you see as one character, and also shows the code unit and byte counts underneath for reference.

Instagram does not publish how its editor counts them, apart from saying Story comments include emojis. If you are near a limit and your text has emoji or styled fonts, leave some room and confirm in the app.

Writing replies that have to fit?

Messages sent through Instagram's messaging API are capped at 1,000 bytes of text. FlowGent sends automated Instagram DMs through that official API, with comment-to-DM flows and keyword replies. There is a 7-day free trial.

Instagram character limits: your questions answered

What is the Instagram bio character limit?

150 characters. Instagram's Help Center says you can write a bio of up to 150 characters. Spaces and line breaks use up room too, so count them.

What is the Instagram caption character limit?

2,200 characters, according to Meta's Instagram publishing API reference. Only the start of a long caption shows in the feed before a "more" link. Many guides put that cut-off at about 125 characters, but Instagram does not state it, so put the important part first.

How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?

Instagram's Help Center currently says up to 5 hashtags on a post, and that a comment with more than 5 will not post. Older guides, and Meta's publishing API reference, still mention 30. Check the Help Center page linked in the tool if you are unsure, because this number has changed.

What is the Instagram comment character limit?

Commonly reported as 2,200 characters, the same as captions. Instagram does not state a comment limit in its Help Center, so we label it as reported rather than official. Comments on Stories are different: the Help Center says they are limited to 60 characters, including emojis.

Do emoji count as one character?

This counter counts each emoji as one character, the way you see it. Instagram does not publish how it counts them, though its Help Center does say Story comments count emojis toward the limit. Below the stats we also show the raw code unit and byte counts so you can see the difference.

What is the Instagram DM character limit?

Instagram's Help Center does not state a limit for messages typed in the app. For messages sent through the Instagram messaging API, which is how automation tools send DMs, Meta's documentation says text must be UTF-8 and 1,000 bytes or less. The tool shows that count in bytes, because emoji and non-Latin letters use more than one byte.
