Yes, you can give an AI assistant access to your Instagram DMs, but only through an official connection, not by handing over your password. The usual route is an MCP connector: you add a server URL to the assistant, sign in once, and approve what it may read or send. Claude, ChatGPT, Grok and Gemini all document some form of custom connector. The catch is the fine print on plans, sign-in and what each can actually do.
Can You Give AI Access to Your Instagram DMs?
Yes, if your Instagram account is a Professional (Business or Creator) account and the connection goes through Meta's official API. The AI assistant does not log in to Instagram as you. A connector sits in the middle, holds Meta's permission, and exposes a few safe actions (list conversations, read a thread, prepare a reply) to the assistant.
Three things decide whether it works for you:
- Your Instagram account type. Personal accounts cannot use Meta's messaging API.
- The connector. The assistant needs a remote MCP server that speaks to Instagram. Instagram itself does not offer one.
- Your assistant's plan. Each vendor limits who may add a custom connector. Details are below, and they change often, so check your own settings screen.
Instagram also has its own built-in Meta AI chat. That is a different thing: it is an AI you talk to inside Instagram, not an AI that manages the messages your customers send you. This guide is about the second case.
Turn Instagram DMs into booked calls
AI that qualifies leads, handles objections, and follows up - so you don't have to.
Why Can't You Just Give an AI Your Instagram Password?
You can technically paste a password into some tools, but you should not. Instagram's Help Center tells people to be careful with third-party apps and not to share login information with any person or app they do not trust. Instagram's Terms of Use also prohibit collecting or using other people's login credentials and accessing the service in an automated way without Meta's permission.
Here is what goes wrong in practice:
- Account security. A password, or a saved login session, is a full key to your account, not just your DMs. An AI agent with that key can also post, change settings and read everything.
- Ban risk. Tools that drive the Instagram app or website with a bot login are the pattern Meta restricts. Losing a business account to save a setup step is a bad trade.
- No clean off switch. An official connection can be revoked in one place. A shared password means changing it everywhere and hoping nothing kept a session.
- No guardrails. A password-based agent has no concept of "read only" or "ask me before sending".
If a tool asks for your Instagram username and password in a form on its own site, treat that as a red flag. A legitimate connection sends you to Instagram or Facebook to approve permissions, then returns you with a token you can revoke.
What Does Official Instagram Access Require?
Official access requires an Instagram Professional account, a Meta app with messaging permissions, and a customer who messaged you first. Meta's developer documentation for the Instagram messaging API lays out the rules, and they apply to every tool, whether it is a chatbot, a CRM or an AI assistant.
| Requirement | What it means |
|---|---|
| Professional account | Business or Creator. Personal accounts cannot use the messaging API. |
| Permissions | The app needs instagram_business_basic and instagram_business_manage_messages. |
| Access level | Standard Access covers accounts you own or manage. Advanced Access (with app review) is needed for accounts you do not own. |
| User-initiated chats | You can message someone only after they messaged your account first. |
| 24-hour window | Replies are allowed within 24 hours of their last message. A person's first message after a Click-to-Direct ad can extend this to up to 7 days. |
| Human Agent tag | A human reply that needs more time can use a separate 7-day window. It is meant for human support, not bots. |
The takeaway for AI: an assistant can read your conversations and draft replies at any time, but sending is limited by the same 24-hour window as every other tool. An AI cannot cold-message strangers, and it cannot reopen a conversation that went quiet days ago. If you want the full technical picture, see our Instagram Messaging API guide.
Most people do not touch the Meta app setup themselves. A hosted tool such as FlowGent already has an approved connection, and you just click Connect Instagram and approve.
Which AI Assistants Can Connect to Instagram DMs Today?
Claude, ChatGPT, Grok and Gemini can all connect to a remote MCP server, so they can all reach Instagram DMs through a connector. The differences are plan limits and sign-in support. This table is based on each vendor's own documentation as of October 2026.
| Assistant | Can it connect a custom connector? | Where | Plans documented | Can it send, or just read? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude | Yes | Customize > Connectors > Add custom connector | Free (one connector), Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise | Both. Tools can create or change data; you can disable individual tools. |
| ChatGPT | Yes, with limits | Plugins > Add custom MCP server (web) | Business and Enterprise/Edu are documented. Admins add it on Business. | Both. ChatGPT may ask for confirmation on write actions. |
| Grok | Yes | grok.com/connectors > New Connector > Custom | Docs describe connectors as open to all Grok users | xAI's page does not address write actions; test before relying on it. |
| Gemini app | Yes, with limits | Settings > Connected Apps > Add a custom app (web) | Personal Google Account, 18+, US, English | Depends on the server. Google's page covers connecting, not write rules. |
| Gemini CLI | Yes | gemini mcp add | Developers | Depends on the server. |
All of these need an MCP server that is reachable on the public internet. FlowGent's is at https://flowgent.ai/mcp, so you do not need to host anything. For how the server works and how it compares to other options, see our Instagram MCP server guide.
None of the assistants can do this without a connector. If you ask a bare chat assistant "read my Instagram DMs", it has no way to see them.
How Do You Give Claude Access to Instagram DMs?
Add FlowGent as a custom connector in Claude, sign in with FlowGent, and choose which Instagram account and permissions to grant. Anthropic's help center says custom connectors are available on Free (limited to one), Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, and that connectors can include tools that create, modify or delete data.
- In Claude, open Customize > Connectors, click Add, then Add custom connector.
- Name it FlowGent and paste
https://flowgent.ai/mcp. - Continue through the authentication step. FlowGent uses OAuth sign-in, so there is no API key to paste.
- Sign in to FlowGent, pick the Instagram account, and choose permissions. Start with read access and add sending later.
- Try: "Show me the Instagram conversations waiting for a reply."
On Team and Enterprise, an organization owner adds the connector first, and each teammate then connects their own FlowGent account. FlowGent's Claude connection guide has the same steps plus a copy button for the URL.
One setting worth knowing: Anthropic notes that during Research, Claude can call connector tools without a prompt for each one, and recommends disabling tools that take write actions in that mode. Open the connector's tool list and turn off anything you do not want used unattended.
How Do You Connect ChatGPT to Instagram DMs?
On ChatGPT Business or Enterprise/Edu, an admin adds the FlowGent MCP URL as a custom server under Plugins on the web. OpenAI's help article says custom MCP server connections and full MCP support, including write and modify actions, are available for Business and Enterprise/Edu on ChatGPT web. On Business, only admins and owners can create them. The article does not list Plus or Pro, so I will not promise those. Check Settings > Plugins on your account to see whether the option appears.
The steps OpenAI documents:
- Go to Plugins, select the plus button, then Add custom MCP server.
- Enter a name and the public HTTPS endpoint,
https://flowgent.ai/mcp. - Configure authentication (OAuth for FlowGent), then acknowledge the risk warning.
- Select Create as a plugin and review the discovered tools.
- Sign in to FlowGent when prompted and choose your Instagram account.
OpenAI says ChatGPT may ask you to confirm write actions depending on context, and that some risky actions may be blocked rather than offered for approval. That fits an ask-and-approve DM workflow well.
A caveat: you may read older guides that mention "Developer Mode". OpenAI's current article says you do not need to turn that on first in the current Plugins experience. Menus have moved around several times this year, so go by what your own screen shows.
How Do You Give Grok Access to Instagram DMs?
In the Grok app on the web, go to grok.com/connectors, choose New Connector, then Custom, enter the MCP server URL and complete authentication. xAI's docs describe this as "Bring your own MCP" and say the server must be reachable on the public internet. They describe connectors as open to all Grok users, and on Business and Enterprise a team admin must set the connector up first.
What the docs do not say, and what I could not verify:
- Whether the consumer connector flow supports OAuth sign-in. The page only says to complete "any required authentication". FlowGent uses OAuth, so try it and see.
- Whether custom connector tools can take write actions. Test with a read-only request first.
The xAI API route is separate. The API's remote MCP tool takes a server URL, a label and an optional token in the Authorization header, and xAI's page documents header-based auth and does not mention OAuth. FlowGent's connector signs in with OAuth, so a plain API call is not a drop-in fit. That route suits developers who already run their own MCP server with token auth.
Short answer for "how to give Grok access to Instagram DMs": it is possible to try through grok.com/connectors, but it is the least documented of the four. Claude is the smoothest today.
How Do You Connect Gemini to Instagram DMs?
In the Gemini web app, open Settings > Connected Apps, choose Add a custom app, paste the MCP URL and follow the prompts. Google's help page lists these requirements: you must be 18 or older and in the US, signed in with a personal Google Account (work and school accounts are not supported for now), with Keep Activity turned on. Custom apps are English only, and you can only add them in the Gemini web app, after which they also work in the mobile app.
If the server does not support Dynamic Client Registration, Google lets you enter OAuth credentials under Advanced features. Type @ and pick the custom app to make sure Gemini uses it for a prompt.
Two other Gemini routes exist:
- Gemini CLI supports remote MCP servers over HTTP and SSE with OAuth, set up with
gemini mcp add --transport http <name> <url>. It needs a local browser for the sign-in step. Check Google's quota and pricing page for your account type. - Gemini Enterprise supports custom MCP servers with the Streamable HTTP transport, but an admin must set it up and register an OAuth client manually, because Dynamic Client Registration is not supported there. It is an IT project, not a five-minute setup.
What About OpenClaw and Self-Hosted Agents?
Self-hosted agents like OpenClaw can reach Instagram DMs only through a skill or plugin that talks to Meta's API, and they put the setup work on you. OpenClaw has no built-in Instagram messaging skill, and the options are community integrations that need your own Professional account linked to a Facebook Page. We cover the steps, permissions and limits in our OpenClaw for Instagram setup guide.
Self-hosting gives you control and costs you time: you manage tokens, the 24-hour window, webhooks and uptime yourself. If your goal is business replies rather than a tinkering project, a hosted connector is simpler. An AI agent for Instagram that already holds the official connection skips most of that.
Ask-and-Approve or Hosted Auto-Replies: Which Mode Do You Need?
Use an AI assistant when you want to stay in the loop; use a hosted agent when replies must go out while you are away. These are two different jobs, and mixing them up is the most common mistake.
| Ask-and-approve (Claude, ChatGPT, etc.) | Hosted auto-replies (an agent such as FlowGent's) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who starts it | You, in a chat | A new DM or comment |
| Runs when your laptop is closed | No | Yes, it runs on the platform |
| Best for | Triage, summaries, drafting, tweaking agent instructions | Answering common questions and capturing leads at volume |
| Human in the loop | Every reply, by design | You set rules and handoff; review afterwards |
| Cost | Your assistant plan, plus the connector's plan | The tool's plan |
An assistant only acts when you open it and ask. It will not answer a DM that arrives at 3 a.m. while you sleep. A hosted agent will, within Meta's window rules, and you control its instructions and when it hands over to you.
Many teams use both: a hosted agent for the routine questions, and an assistant to review conversations, spot patterns and draft the tricky replies.
Where Does FlowGent Fit?
FlowGent is the Instagram side of this setup: it holds the Meta connection, runs the automations, and exposes a remote MCP server that assistants connect to.
What it does:
- Instagram DM automation. An AI agent replies to DMs from your instructions and knowledge base, comment-to-DM automations send a DM when someone comments a keyword, and an inbox lets you take over any conversation.
- MCP server at
https://flowgent.ai/mcp. MCP clients can list and read Instagram conversations, prepare and send replies, mark messages read, pause or resume automatic replies on a thread, draft and test agents, and create comment-to-DM automations. - Approval built in. Sending takes two steps: prepare an exact reply preview, then send it. Sending also pauses automatic replies on that thread so the agent and you do not talk over each other.
- Drafts stay drafts. New agent drafts do not go live until published, and new automations are created off.
What it does not do:
- Instagram only. The MCP server works with Instagram, not WhatsApp, Slack or email.
- No Meta workarounds. Replies are bound by Meta's 24-hour window, and nothing here messages people who have not messaged you first.
- Not a replacement for your assistant. FlowGent does not include Claude or ChatGPT. You bring your own assistant plan.
On cost: connecting the MCP server is free. Going live with automations needs a trial or paid plan. Starter is $19/month and includes flows and comment-to-DM without AI. Plans with AI agent replies start at $49/month, with $99 and $199 tiers above, and there is a 7-day free trial. See pricing for current details.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can ChatGPT read my Instagram DMs?
Not by itself. ChatGPT needs a custom MCP connector that talks to Instagram's official API. OpenAI documents custom MCP servers on Business and Enterprise/Edu plans on the web. The article I checked does not list Plus or Pro, so confirm in your own Plugins settings. Once connected, it reads only what you authorize.
Can Claude send Instagram DMs for me?
Yes, through a connector that offers a send tool. With FlowGent, Claude first prepares a reply preview, then sends it after you approve. Meta's 24-hour window still applies, so Claude can reply to recent conversations but cannot start a chat with someone who has not messaged you.
Is it safe to give an AI access to my Instagram DMs?
It is safer than sharing a password, but not risk-free. Use official OAuth, grant read access first, and keep sending behind approval. Treat customer messages as untrusted text, since someone could try to plant instructions in a DM. Revoke access any time from the connector settings.
Does Grok work with Instagram?
Grok's web app supports custom MCP connectors at grok.com/connectors, so it can connect to a remote server in principle. xAI's docs do not state whether OAuth sign-in or write actions work for custom connectors, so test with a read-only request first. Claude has the clearest documentation today.
Do I need an Instagram Business account?
Yes. Meta's messaging API works with Professional accounts, meaning Business or Creator. A personal account cannot be connected to FlowGent or any other official tool. Switching is free in Instagram's settings. Some tools also need a linked Facebook Page.
Can an AI auto-reply to Instagram DMs on its own?
An assistant like Claude or ChatGPT only responds when you prompt it, so it does not auto-reply. For automatic replies you need a hosted agent that listens for new messages, such as FlowGent's AI agent. It still follows Meta's rules, including the 24-hour reply window.
How do I remove an AI's access to my Instagram?
Revoke the connection where you granted it. In FlowGent, open the connection page and use Revoke access next to the client. You can also remove the connector in the assistant itself. For app permissions on Instagram, see the privacy settings for apps and websites in Instagram's Help Center.
