Instagram DM Character Limit (2026): App, API and Bytes

What Is the Instagram DM Character Limit?

Instagram's Help Center does not publish a character limit for messages typed in the app. The number almost every guide repeats is 1,000 characters per message, and we treat it as commonly reported, not official. The one limit Meta does document is for software: text sent through the Instagram messaging API must be UTF-8 and 1,000 bytes or less.

So there are two numbers, and they are not the same thing:

Where you sendLimitStatus
Instagram app (typing a DM)About 1,000 charactersCommonly reported, not stated by Instagram
Instagram messaging API (tools and automations)1,000 bytes of UTF-8 textDocumented by Meta
↔ Scroll sideways

If your message is plain English and under roughly 900 characters, you are fine in both places. The difference only shows up with emoji, accents and non-Latin scripts, covered next. Checked against Meta's developer documentation and Instagram's Help Center in October 2026.

Characters or Bytes: Which One Does Instagram Count?

For API messages, bytes. A character is what you see. A byte is what the system stores, and in UTF-8 different characters take different amounts of space. Plain English letters, digits and punctuation use 1 byte. Accented letters and Cyrillic or Arabic letters use 2. Chinese and Japanese characters use 3. Most emoji use 4, and some use far more.

Instagram does not say how the app itself counts emoji, so for typed messages the only safe rule is to leave headroom. For anything sent through the API, use the byte math below.

TextWhat you seeBytes in UTF-8
Hello5 characters5
café4 characters5 (the é takes 2)
Привет6 characters12
こんにちは5 characters15
😀1 emoji4
❤️1 emoji6 (the heart plus an invisible variation selector)
🇺🇸1 flag8
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦1 family emoji25 (four people joined by invisible connectors)
↔ Scroll sideways

What a 1,000-byte cap means in practice:

  • About 1,000 characters of plain English
  • About 500 characters of Cyrillic or Arabic text
  • About 333 Chinese or Japanese characters
  • About 250 simple emoji, and far fewer of the joined ones

A message that looks short can still be over the cap if it is emoji-heavy or written in a non-Latin script. Our free Instagram character counter shows the byte count next to the character count, so you can check a template before you save it.

How Many Words Fit in an Instagram DM?

Neither Instagram nor Meta documents a word limit, only the length limit. At the commonly reported 1,000 characters, normal English prose is somewhere around 150 to 180 words, depending on how long your words are. A short paragraph or two fits. A full email does not.

If you are writing for the API, do the same estimate in bytes. Plain English is 1 byte per character, so the word count is the same, but every emoji you add costs 4 bytes or more.

What Happens When Your DM Is Too Long?

It depends on where you send it, and Instagram documents neither case in detail.

In the app: reports vary, and Instagram does not say. Users in Reddit threads describe the composer refusing more text or the send failing, and some mention long pastes being trimmed. If you are near the limit, send the message in two parts instead of testing it. We have not verified the exact in-app behavior ourselves.

Through the API: Meta states the requirement (UTF-8, 1,000 bytes or less) but does not describe the exact error for going over. The safe assumption is that the request is rejected, not quietly shortened, so a tool should check the byte length before it sends. Good automation tools split a long reply into several messages or keep templates short from the start.

Either way, the fix is the same: keep each message well under the limit and split anything longer.

How Long Can an Instagram Voice Message Be?

Instagram's Help Center explains how to send a voice message but gives no maximum length. In May 2025, Social Media Today reported that Instagram was extending voice clips in DMs from 1 minute to 5 minutes. Some users have since reported longer recordings on their accounts, which suggests the cap varies by version or rollout. Treat 5 minutes as the last number we can source and expect it to change.

Two things from the Help Center that matter more than the length:

  • People in the chat can read an auto-generated transcript by tapping View transcription.
  • If you message someone who does not follow you, the message is a request and can only contain text. Voice notes, photos and videos wait until they accept.

How message requests work, and how many you can send, is covered in our guide to Instagram DM limits and in the message requests explainer. We do not repeat it here.

What Are the Photo, Video and File Limits in DMs?

Instagram's Help Center does not list size limits for media you send by hand in the app. Meta does document them for the messaging API, which is what automation tools use:

Media typeSupported formatsMaximum size
Imagepng, jpeg8 MB
Audioaac, m4a, wav, mp425 MB
Videomp4, ogg, avi, mov, webm25 MB
Filepdf25 MB
↔ Scroll sideways

A single API message can carry up to ten images. If you send a PDF through the app, the practical limit may differ from these numbers, so treat the table as the API rule, not a promise about the app.

Instagram Character Limits at a Glance

DM length is only one of several limits people mix up. Here are the others, with how sure we are about each:

WhereLimitSource status
DM text (app)About 1,000 charactersCommonly reported
DM text (API)1,000 bytes, UTF-8Meta developer docs
Bio150 charactersInstagram Help Center
Caption2,200 characters, 20 @ mentionsMeta publishing API reference
HashtagsHelp Center currently says 5 per postInstagram Help Center, changed over time
Notes60 charactersInstagram Help Center
Story comments60 characters, emoji includedInstagram Help Center
Post commentsAbout 2,200 charactersCommonly reported
Username30 charactersCommonly reported
↔ Scroll sideways

Meta's publishing API reference still mentions 30 hashtags, while the Help Center says 5, so check the current rule in the app before you plan around either. For Notes in depth, see our post on the Instagram Notes character limit. For image sizes rather than text, see Instagram post size.

How Do You Send a Long Message on Instagram?

Split it, and lead with the part the reader needs. These habits work in the app and in automations:

  1. One idea per message. Two or three short messages read better in a chat than one wall of text.
  2. Put the answer first. Price, time or the link the person asked for goes in the opening line.
  3. Use a link for detail. A short message plus a link to a page or PDF replaces a long block. Links must be properly formatted URLs.
  4. Count emoji as bytes in templates. If a saved reply will go out through the API, trim emoji and check the byte length.
  5. Keep line breaks deliberate. They count too, and a chat full of them looks longer than it is.

If you write the same long reply often, save it as a template and let the tool deliver it in parts. Our Instagram messaging API guide covers what the API allows in more detail.

Where Does FlowGent Fit?

FlowGent automates Instagram DM replies through Meta's official API, so every automated message follows the documented 1,000-byte text cap. Flows and AI agent replies are kept within it, so you do not have to count bytes yourself. What we do not do is raise or work around the limit: a long answer still goes out as a short message plus a link, or as several messages.

What FlowGent covers for this job:

  • Comment-to-DM automations and keyword flows that send a prepared reply
  • AI agent replies on AI plans, written to fit the message cap
  • An inbox where you answer the rest by hand
  • A remote MCP server at https://flowgent.ai/mcp that lets an MCP client read conversations and prepare replies you approve before they send

What it does not do: it does not change how Instagram counts characters in the app, and it cannot confirm an exact in-app limit that Instagram has not published. Plans start at $19/month for flows and comment-to-DM, with AI plans from $49/month, and there is a 7-day free trial. See the Instagram DM automation guide for how the setup works.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Instagram DM character limit?

Instagram does not publish a limit for messages typed in the app. The commonly reported figure is 1,000 characters. For messages sent through Meta's API, the documented rule is UTF-8 text of 1,000 bytes or less, so emoji and non-Latin letters count for more than one byte each.

Is there an Instagram DM word limit?

No word limit is documented. The practical limit is length: about 1,000 characters, which is roughly 150 to 180 words of ordinary English. If your message is longer, split it into two or three shorter ones.

How long can an Instagram message be if I use emoji?

Shorter than 1,000 characters if you send through the API, because most emoji use 4 bytes and joined emoji such as family or flag emoji use more. As a rough guide, 250 simple emoji would fill a 1,000-byte message on their own.

Does the 1,000 limit apply to automated DMs?

Yes. Meta's messaging API documentation says text must be UTF-8 and 1,000 bytes or less. Automation tools that use the official API are bound by it, and a good one splits or shortens replies before sending.

What is the character limit for an Instagram caption, bio and comment?

A caption holds 2,200 characters according to Meta's publishing API reference. A bio holds 150, according to Instagram's Help Center. Post comments are commonly reported at 2,200, and Story comments are limited to 60 characters including emoji.

Can I send a long voice message on Instagram?

Yes, within a cap that Instagram does not state in its Help Center. Social Media Today reported in May 2025 that voice clips in DMs were extended from 1 to 5 minutes. Recipients can tap View transcription to read it.

Why did my Instagram message not send?

A too-long message is one cause, but not the only one. Message requests allow text only until the other person accepts, and a temporary action block can also stop sending. Our guide to Instagram DMs not working walks through the checks.
