Instagram MCP Server: What It Can Do and How to Set One Up (2026)

What Is an Instagram MCP Server?

An Instagram MCP server is a small service that exposes Instagram actions, like reading DMs, listing posts or sending a reply, as tools an AI assistant can call. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard that lets apps such as Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT talk to outside services without custom code for each one.

Think of it as a translator. The assistant asks "show me unread conversations", the MCP server turns that into an Instagram API call, and the answer comes back as plain data the assistant can reason about. Without it, Claude cannot see your Instagram account at all.

Most Instagram MCP servers sit on top of Meta's official Instagram API. A few use unofficial scraping instead, and that difference matters a lot for account safety. We cover both below.

Does Instagram Have an Official MCP Server?

No. Meta does not publish an Instagram MCP server that we could find. Every Instagram MCP server is built by a third party: a hosted service, an open-source project you run yourself, or a scraper. Meta does publish the underlying Instagram API that the good ones use.

The "is there an API" part of the question has a clear answer. Meta's Instagram API with Instagram Login is built for Instagram professional accounts, meaning business or creator accounts. Meta's platform overview states that app users must have a professional account, so personal accounts are not supported. Anything an MCP server does on top of that API inherits those rules, no matter how it is packaged.

For a developer-level walkthrough of the API itself, see our Instagram Messaging API guide.

What Can an Instagram MCP Server Do (and Not Do)?

An Instagram MCP server can do whatever its tools and Meta's permissions allow: read conversations, reply to messages, list posts and comments, publish content or pull analytics. It cannot bypass Meta's rules: personal accounts are out, and DMs follow the messaging window and user-initiated conversation limits.

The rules that matter most for messaging, from Meta's Messaging API documentation (checked October 2026):

RuleWhat Meta says
Account typeInstagram professional account (business or creator). Personal accounts are not supported
Who starts the conversationYour app can only message someone after that person has messaged your account first
Messaging windowFor most user actions the window lasts 24 hours
Click-to-Direct adsAfter a first message from a Click-to-Direct ad, the window may last up to 7 days
Human agentA separate 7-day window exists for human agent replies when an issue cannot be resolved in the standard window
Private replies to commentsLimited to 750 calls per hour per account
Permissionsinstagram_business_basic and instagram_business_manage_messages for messaging
↔ Scroll sideways

Two practical consequences. First, an AI cannot cold-DM a list of people through a compliant MCP server. Second, if a customer wrote three days ago and you ask Claude to answer today, the send can fail because the window closed. A good server tells you this instead of hiding it.

Also note that replies sent through a third-party app move the conversation into the General folder in Instagram, per Meta's overview. And where the law requires it, automated chats must disclose that the person is talking to an automated service. For more on timing limits, read our Instagram DM limits guide.

Which Instagram MCP Option Should You Use?

Pick by what you need. For DMs and comment-to-DM automations on your own account, a hosted server on Meta's official API with approval before sending is the safest. For posting, a publishing tool fits. For research on other people's accounts, scrapers exist but carry account risk.

OptionHow it connectsGood forWatch out for
FlowGent MCP (hosted)OAuth, one URL, no API keyInstagram DMs, agents, comment-to-DM automations, reply approvalInstagram only. Comment-to-DM needs a trial or paid plan
Composio Instagram toolkitHosted OAuth, used through Composio's platformWide tool coverage across many apps (its page lists 32 Instagram tools)General platform: you build the workflow and safety rules yourself
Publishing-focused hosted servers (for example Blotato)Hosted, OAuth or API key depending on clientScheduling and posting from an assistantBuilt around publishing, so check its DM and approval details
Open-source self-hosted (for example mcpware/instagram-mcp on GitHub, which lists 23 tools)You run it locallyDevelopers who want full controlYou create a Meta developer app, handle tokens that expire (the repo notes 60 days) and may need Meta App Review for DM access
Unofficial scrapers using a logged-in sessionBrowser or private APIReading public dataViolates Instagram's terms, ban risk for the account you log in with, can break overnight
↔ Scroll sideways

Tool counts above come from each project's own page and change often. Verify before you commit to one.

The pattern we see in the top search results: most pages list tools, but few explain the messaging window or tell you which route risks your account. If you only need to read public data and accept the risk, a scraper works. If the account matters to your business, stay on the official API.

Our own OpenClaw for Instagram guide covers the same landscape from the OpenClaw side.

How Do You Connect FlowGent's Instagram MCP Server to Claude?

Add FlowGent as a custom connector in Claude using the URL https://flowgent.ai/mcp, sign in to FlowGent when asked, choose your Instagram accounts and permissions, then ask Claude about your conversations. No API key or client secret is needed. Connecting works on the free plan.

The steps match our Claude connection page:

  1. Add the connector. In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors, then Add custom connector. Name it FlowGent and paste https://flowgent.ai/mcp.
  2. Connect and choose permissions. Select Connect, sign in to FlowGent, and pick which Instagram accounts and which permissions Claude gets. Start with read-only if you want to look around first.
  3. Ask something simple. "Show me the Instagram conversations waiting for a reply."

Custom connectors using remote MCP are available on Claude's Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans according to Anthropic's help center, with Free limited to one custom connector. On Team and Enterprise, an owner adds the connector in organization settings first, then each teammate connects their own FlowGent account.

Don't have an Instagram account connected to FlowGent yet? Ask Claude to start the connection and it returns a browser link. Instagram's own login and consent screens run in the browser, not inside Claude.

You can revoke access any time from the same connection page.

Can You Use the Same Instagram MCP URL in Other Apps?

Yes for clients that support remote MCP servers with OAuth. We checked the official documentation for each one below; the same URL, https://flowgent.ai/mcp, goes in.

ClientRemote MCP with OAuthHow to add it
Claude (web, Desktop)Documented by AnthropicCustomize, Connectors, Add custom connector
Claude CodeDocumented by Anthropicclaude mcp add --transport http flowgent https://flowgent.ai/mcp, then run /mcp and follow the browser login
CursorDocumented by Cursor (Streamable HTTP and SSE, OAuth supported)Add a url entry under mcpServers in mcp.json
ChatGPTCustom connectors exist in developer modeAdd a connector with the URL and OAuth. Plan availability and menu names change, so check OpenAI's current help pages before relying on this
↔ Scroll sideways

For Claude Code, tokens are stored and refreshed automatically, and you can clear the login from the /mcp menu. For Cursor, a minimal config looks like this:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "flowgent": {
      "url": "https://flowgent.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

We have tested the Claude flow most. For ChatGPT and Cursor, we are relying on their documentation for how connectors work, so if a menu looks different, trust the vendor's current docs over this page. For Grok and Gemini steps too, see how to give AI access to your Instagram DMs.

What Tools Does FlowGent's Instagram MCP Server Expose?

FlowGent's server exposes 23 tools in four groups: conversations and replies, agents, connections, and comment-to-DM automations. Each tool needs a specific permission that you grant when you connect, so Claude only gets what you chose.

Conversations and replies

  • list_conversations and get_conversation: find and read Instagram threads. Supports search and unread filters.
  • update_conversation: mark read, assign a teammate, or pause and resume automatic replies.
  • prepare_reply: builds an exact preview of a reply with the recipient. It does not send.
  • send_reply: sends the prepared reply.
  • get_operation: checks whether a send or test finished.

Agents

  • list_agents, get_agent: read your AI agents and their instructions.
  • create_agent_draft, update_agent_draft, add_knowledge_source: write drafts and add reference text or one public webpage.
  • test_agent: simulate a conversation before going live. It uses workspace AI credits and does not take external actions.
  • publish_agent, set_agent_status: publish a draft and turn AI replies on or off for an account.

Connections

  • get_workspace_context, list_connections, start_channel_connection: see your workspace, accounts, and get a link to connect Instagram.

Comment-to-DM automations

  • list_posts, list_automations, get_automation: browse recent posts and existing automations.
  • create_automation, update_automation, set_automation_status: build a keyword-triggered DM, with optional link button, public comment replies and an email capture step. New automations are created inactive.

The server is Instagram only. It does not touch WhatsApp, Slack or website chat.

Is It Safe to Let an AI Reply to Instagram DMs?

It is safe when a human approves what goes out and the AI has the narrowest permissions it needs. FlowGent's MCP is built around that: replies are previewed first, customer text is treated as untrusted, and you choose scopes when you connect.

Here is what the design does:

  • Preview before sending. prepare_reply creates an exact preview with the recipient and an expiry of 10 minutes. send_reply only sends that prepared message. Sending a reply also pauses automatic AI replies on that thread, so a human and an agent do not answer the same person.
  • Customer messages are data, not instructions. DMs and post captions are flagged as untrusted content, and the server tells the assistant not to follow instructions found inside them. This is the standard defense against prompt injection through a message.
  • Scopes you choose. Twelve separate permissions cover reading, replying, drafting, publishing agents, and automations. You can connect with read-only access and add sending later.
  • Nothing goes live by accident. New agent drafts stay inactive until published. New automations stay off until turned on, and turning one on needs a trial or paid plan.
  • Audit trail. Your connection page shows recent actions your clients took, without message contents, and you can revoke access at any time.

Safety also depends on you. Use read-only first, read the preview before approving, and keep the 24-hour window in mind. Our guide to Instagram auto replies covers when automated answers help and when they hurt.

Where Does FlowGent Fit?

FlowGent is an Instagram DM automation tool: AI agents that reply to messages, comment-to-DM automations, flows and an inbox. The MCP server is a second way to operate it, from Claude or another MCP client, instead of clicking through the dashboard.

What it is good at: reading your inbox in plain language, drafting replies grounded in your own agent instructions, building and testing an agent by chatting, and setting up a comment-to-DM automation without opening the editor. Replies need your approval.

What it does not do: it does not publish posts or schedule content, it does not read other people's public accounts, it does not message people who have not messaged you, and it does not cover other channels through MCP.

Plans, as listed on the pricing page: connecting to Claude works on the free plan. Turning on comment-to-DM automations needs a 7-day trial or a paid plan. Starter is $19/month and includes comment-to-DM and flows without AI. AI agent plans start at $49/month, then $99 and $199. If you want the full picture of how this fits a business workflow, see the AI agent for Instagram use case and our Instagram DM automation guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Instagram have an MCP server?

Not an official one from Meta that we could find. Every Instagram MCP server is third-party: hosted services like FlowGent or Composio, open-source projects you run yourself, or scrapers. The reliable ones use Meta's official Instagram API, which requires a business or creator account.

What is MCP chat?

MCP chat is informal shorthand for talking to an app through an AI assistant that uses the Model Context Protocol. You chat in Claude or another client, and the assistant calls tools on a connected server, such as an Instagram MCP server, to read data or take actions you approve.

Is there an API for Instagram?

Yes. Meta offers the Instagram API with Instagram Login for professional (business or creator) accounts, including a Messaging API. Personal accounts are not supported. Messaging has a 24-hour window for most user actions and requires the other person to message you first.

Can Claude read and reply to my Instagram DMs?

Yes, through an MCP server connected to your professional account. With FlowGent, Claude can list and read conversations, then prepare a reply preview. The reply is sent only when you ask for it, and Instagram's 24-hour messaging window still applies.

Do I need to build a Meta developer app?

Not with a hosted server. FlowGent handles the Instagram connection, so you sign in with OAuth. With self-hosted open-source servers you usually create your own Meta app, manage tokens, and may need App Review for messaging permissions.

Are Instagram scraper MCP servers safe?

They carry risk. Scrapers that use a logged-in session or private endpoints can violate Instagram's terms and put the logged-in account at risk of restrictions. Servers built on the official API are the safer route for an account you depend on.

Does the FlowGent MCP server work with ChatGPT or Cursor?

It uses a standard remote MCP URL with OAuth, which Cursor documents as supported. ChatGPT offers custom connectors in developer mode, but plans and menus change, so check OpenAI's current help pages. We have tested Claude most thoroughly.
