What Are Instagram Notes?
Instagram Notes are short updates, up to 60 characters, that show at the top of your messages inbox and above your profile picture. Instagram's Help Center describes Notes as a space to share updates and thoughts as short posts with certain people. You can share one note at a time.
Where Stories are about pictures and video, a note is about a quick line of text that invites a reply. Instagram's own About pages describe Notes as short, conversational messages shared with your mutual followers or your Close Friends, and replies come back as direct messages. If you just spotted someone's note, skip to how to reply or like.

How Do You Post a Note on Instagram?
Open Messages and tap your profile picture at the top of your inbox, write the note, choose who sees it and tap Share. Instagram's Help Center lists the same steps from your profile, where you tap your profile picture instead. Button labels differ between app versions, so look for Note or Leave a new note.
On the mobile app, the steps from the inbox are:
- Tap Messages at the bottom.
- Tap your profile picture at the top of your inbox.
- Enter a note of up to 60 characters.
- Choose Followers you follow back or Close friends.
- Tap Share.
To change a note, tap it, then tap Leave a new note. Instagram says your new note replaces the one you shared before, so there is no way to run two notes at once.
How Many Characters Can an Instagram Note Have?
An Instagram note can have up to 60 characters. That is the limit the Help Center gives for every note, whether you start it from your inbox or your profile. It is about one short sentence, so write for a quick glance and keep the longer message for the reply.
To check a draft before you post it, paste it into our free Instagram character counter.
Can You Add Music, GIFs, a Location or Mentions to a Note?
Yes, the Help Center lists all four, with limits. When you write a note on the mobile app, you can also:
- Mention someone, if that person allows it.
- Add music by tapping Add music. Instagram notes that music notes are not available in all countries.
- Add a GIF by tapping Add GIF. The Help Center lists this in the inbox flow.
- Add a location by tapping Add location. Your current location is added, and you can tap it to change it. Location services must be on, and anyone who can see the note can see the location.
Sharing what you are listening to. Instagram has a separate article for Spotify. Once you link your Spotify account, your note updates in real time to show what you are playing. Instagram says it keeps updating for up to 24 hours or until 30 minutes after you stop playing music. To start, tap Note, then the music icon, then Link Spotify if you have not yet. You can stop it by tapping your note and then Stop sharing from Spotify, and a new note replaces a Spotify note. You manage the connection under Menu, Your app and media, App and website permissions, then Spotify. Instagram adds that the feature is not available to everyone.
Can You Post Video Notes or Add Notes to Posts and Reels?
Instagram's Help Center does not give steps for video notes, and it does not describe attaching a note to a post or a reel. What it does say is that certain notes, such as notes with GIFs or videos, will not appear on your profile.
Some third-party guides describe a note on a post or reel, or a video note with its own button. We could not confirm either on Instagram's own pages, so we are not giving steps for them. If your app shows an option the Help Center does not mention, it is probably a gradual rollout, since Instagram marks several Notes features as not available to everyone.
Who Can See Your Instagram Notes?
Only the audience you choose can see a note. Instagram gives two options: Followers you follow back and Close friends. A note is not public, and people outside those groups do not see it.
The Close friends option has a catch. Instagram says that if you share a note with Close friends, it can be seen by close friends who follow you back. A friend on your list who does not follow you will not see it.
For a business account, this has a practical effect. The first option is limited to followers you follow back, so a brand that follows few accounts reaches few people that way. Close friends can widen it, but that is a list you build by hand. This follows from Instagram's rules and is not a reach figure from Instagram.
How Long Do Instagram Notes Last?
A note stays visible for up to 24 hours, then it is no longer visible on Instagram. You can delete it earlier by tapping your note and then Delete note.
A new note replaces the old one. Instagram adds that even after 24 hours, an expired note can still go through review if it breaks the Community Standards.
How Do You Reply to or Like an Instagram Note?
Tap the note at the top of your inbox or above someone's profile picture. You can then tap Like, or tap Send message or Reply to [name], type your answer and tap Send. You can also like a note by double-tapping it.
What happens next is private. Instagram says a reply is sent as a direct message and starts a conversation between you and the person who posted the note only. A like can be seen only by the person who shared the note. Instagram marks note interactions as not available to everyone, and its help page for them lists the Android, iPhone and iPad apps.
Instagram says you can find these conversations in your inbox. Our guide to how to reply to a DM on Instagram covers answering them, including from a computer.
Can You See Who Viewed Your Instagram Note?
No, Instagram does not describe a viewer list for notes. What you can see is who liked or replied to your note, and only you can see that. Tap your own note to see the list of people who liked it.
From that list, you can tap Messages next to a name to start a conversation with that person.
How Do You Hide or Mute Notes on Instagram?
You can mute notes from one person at a time. Open Messages, tap and hold their note, tap Mute notes, and confirm. Instagram says people are not notified, and you will still see the stories and posts they share.
To unmute, go to their profile, tap Following, tap Mute, then tap the toggle next to Notes.
Instagram's Help Center documents no setting to turn Notes off for everyone, so muting per person is the way to hide notes. To stop your own note from showing, delete it. If you see a note that breaks the Community Standards, you can report it, and Instagram has a Help page for that. Muting and reporting are listed for the mobile apps only.
Can You Use Instagram Notes on a Computer?
You can post a note from a computer. The Help Center has computer steps: click Messages on the left, then click your note below your profile picture, or go to your profile and click Note... above your profile picture. Write up to 60 characters, choose your audience and click Share.
Liking, replying to, muting and reporting notes are listed as not available on computers, so you will need the mobile app for those. Notes are also not available on Meta Quest devices.
How Can a Business Use Notes to Start DMs?
Notes work best as a nudge to start a conversation, not as an announcement. Instagram's About pages suggest ending a note with a question or a call to action that invites friends to DM you. Every reply lands in your inbox, where you can answer it like any other message.
A few ways to put that to use:
- Ask a quick question. For example, "Which color should we restock? Reply here" is 41 characters.
- Tease a post. "New Reel is up. Which one should we make next?" is 46 characters and invites a reply.
- Follow up with likers. Tap your note, open the list of people who liked it, and tap Messages next to a name to start a chat.
- Save the details for the DM. There is little room in 60 characters, so use the note to get a reply and send the details in the conversation. For a link that opens a chat with your account from your bio, a Story or an email, our free Instagram DM link generator builds an ig.me link.
Keep expectations modest. A note only reaches the audience you choose, so treat it as a low-effort way to talk to people who already know you.
Notes are posted by hand in the Instagram app, and FlowGent does not create them. It covers the conversations that notes and posts start: it connects to your professional account through Meta's official Instagram API and can answer comments with a private reply (comment-to-DM), reply to keywords in DMs and, on plans with AI, answer open questions from content you provide, with human handoff in the inbox. Starter is $19 per month for flows without AI, Hobby is $49 per month with the AI agent, and there is a 7-day free trial. See the Instagram DM automation guide for how the pieces fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Instagram Notes for?
They are for sharing a short update or thought with a limited audience, up to 60 characters, at the top of your inbox and above your profile picture. People who see a note can like it or reply, and a reply becomes a direct message between the two of you.
Can everyone see your Instagram Notes?
No. You choose between Followers you follow back and Close friends. Close friends can see a note only if they follow you back, and someone who does not follow you will not see it.
How long do Instagram Notes last?
Up to 24 hours. After that a note is no longer visible. You can delete it sooner by tapping it and then Delete note, and posting a new note replaces the old one.
How do you turn off Instagram Notes?
Instagram does not document a switch that turns Notes off. You can mute notes from a person: tap and hold their note in Messages, then tap Mute notes. Unmute from their profile under Following, Mute. To remove your own note, tap it and choose Delete note.
Can you see who viewed your Instagram note?
No viewer list is documented. You can see who liked or replied to your note, and only you can see that. Tap your note to see the likes, then tap Messages next to a name to start a chat.
Can you use Instagram Notes on desktop?
You can post a note from a computer by clicking Messages, then your note below your profile picture, or from your profile. Liking, replying to, muting and reporting notes are listed for the mobile apps only.
Why can't I see the music or Spotify option in notes?
Instagram says music notes are not available in all countries, and sharing from Spotify is not available to everyone. Update the app and check again. If it still does not show, the feature has not reached your account.
