How Do You Reply to a DM on Instagram?
On the Instagram app, replying to a DM takes three taps:
- Tap Messages at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap the conversation you want to answer.
- Type in the Message... box at the bottom and tap Send.
That covers most replies. The rest of this guide handles the cases that trip people up: answering one specific message inside a long chat, replying from a computer, messages that arrive as requests, and replying fast when you run a business account. If you are answering a reply to one of your Notes, it arrives in your inbox like any other message, and our Instagram Notes guide explains how Notes work.
If you are starting a new chat instead of replying, Instagram's Help Center says to tap Messages, then Compose in the top right, choose the people, type, and tap Send. For someone you follow, you can also open their profile and tap Message. If you want people to start the chat with you, share an Instagram DM link.

How Do You Reply to a Specific Message in a Chat?
Busy chats get confusing when you answer a question from five messages ago. Instagram's reply feature quotes the original message above your answer.
According to the Instagram Help Center{:target="_blank"}, on the mobile app you:
- Open the conversation from Messages.
- Tap and hold the message you want to answer.
- Tap Reply, then type your response.
The same menu lets you tap an emoji to react, Forward the message, or Add sticker.
Two details from Meta's own announcements: a reply can include stickers, GIFs, videos, photos and voice messages, not only text. And you can edit a sent message for 15 minutes by pressing and holding it and choosing edit.
Many people swipe the message to start a reply. It is widely used, but the Help Center documents tap and hold, so if swiping does nothing, use tap and hold and check that the app is up to date.
To take back a message you sent by mistake, tap and hold it and tap Unsend. Once unsent, it is no longer visible to the people in the chat, though they may have already seen it.
How Do You Respond to Messages on Instagram From a Computer?
You can answer DMs in a desktop browser at instagram.com. Per the Help Center:
- Click Messages on the left.
- Click the conversation.
- Hover over a message you received. Three icons appear: Options (which includes Forward), Emoji for reactions and Reply.
- Click Reply to quote that message, type your answer and send.
For a normal new message with no quote, just type in the box at the bottom of the open chat.
Two desktop limits worth knowing. Instagram's Hidden Words filtering for message requests is not supported in web browsers, and some features, like the Ice Breaker questions businesses can set up, are mobile-only. If a setting seems to be missing on desktop, check it on your phone.
How Do You Reply to a Message Request?
A message request is a DM from someone you do not follow. Instagram's Help Center explains that if you follow the sender, the message lands in your inbox; if you do not, it appears as a message request. When you accept a request, future messages from that person go directly to your inbox.
To handle requests on the mobile app, open Messages and tap Requests. Tap a message to read it. Options include Accept and Delete, and you can block or report the sender. Tapping Delete all at the bottom clears the whole folder.
Professional accounts get one extra detail: request messages are not marked as seen until you accept them, and replying directly to a request moves the conversation to your primary folder.
A message request from someone who does not follow you can only contain text. They cannot send photos, videos or voice notes until you accept. If you are seeing "wants to send you a message" notices and want to understand or reduce them, read our guide to Instagram message requests.
Why Can't You Reply to an Instagram Message?
If the reply box is missing or the message will not send, work through these causes:
- A block. Instagram's Help Center says accounts you have blocked cannot send you message requests or add you to groups. Unblock them first if you want to talk again.
- A message request is waiting. If the thread sits in Requests, replying or accepting moves it to your main inbox.
- You hit a sending limit. Instagram limits messages to stop unwanted ones like spam. If you were warned and kept sending, you may be blocked from sending more direct messages for a period. See our guide to Instagram DM limits.
- The app is out of date. Instagram recommends updating when something stops working.
- A temporary problem. Restart your phone, test Wi-Fi and mobile data, and if nothing helps, reinstall. These are the steps in Instagram's troubleshooting guide{:target="_blank"}.
Still stuck? Tap Profile, Menu, Help under More info and support, then Report a Problem. Our guide to Instagram DMs not working goes deeper.
How Do You Reply Faster on a Business Account?
Business and creator accounts get a professional inbox on the mobile app with three folders: Primary, General and Requests. Personal accounts do not get these folders, but you can switch to an Instagram business account to get them. Swipe messages you will get to later into General. Notifications are on for Primary and off for General by default.
The biggest time saver is saved replies. Instagram's Help Center describes it:
- Press and hold a message you have already sent.
- Tap More, then Save.
- Create a keyboard shortcut for that message.
- Later, type the shortcut as your message and tap the chat icon that appears to fill in the reply.
Save what people ask daily: shipping times, pricing, how to book, returns.
You can also show tappable frequently asked questions when someone opens a chat:
- In Messages, tap the three-dot icon, then Tools.
- Tap Frequently asked questions and switch on Show Questions.
- Tap Add Question and enter a question and an optional automated response.
Instagram allows up to four. In the professional inbox you can also filter to unread or flagged threads and select several chats for bulk actions.
How Do You Reply to Instagram DMs in Meta Business Suite?
If your professional account is connected to a Facebook Page, you can manage DMs on a computer from Meta Business Suite. Per Meta's Business Help Center:
- Open Meta Business Suite and click Inbox in the left menu.
- Open the Instagram tab at the top.
- Select a conversation, write in the box at the bottom and press Enter.
- To answer a specific message, hover over it and click Reply first.
You need messaging permissions for the profile, and Instagram message access must be allowed. Access is on by default when you connect an account. You can change it in the Instagram app under Profile, Menu, Messages and story replies, Message requests, Connected tools. If it is off, you can only view and send Instagram messages from Instagram itself.
One note from Meta's developer documentation: replying through a third-party app moves the conversation to the General folder, so threads may shift folders.
Can Instagram Reply to DMs Automatically?
Yes, in a few ways. All of the following are official Meta features:
- Meta Business Suite automations. In Inbox, click Automations, then Create automation. Meta's templates include an auto reply for first-time messages, an away message, frequently asked questions, hours, location, contact information, custom keywords and comment to message. Keyword automations are only available on desktop.
- Instagram's FAQ tool. The four-question tool described above.
- AI auto replies for creators. Instagram's Help Center says this feature is being gradually introduced and may not be available to you yet. It requires a professional account and works from Professional dashboard, then Your AI.
The limitation of these tools is depth. A fixed reply cannot tell the difference between "what are your hours" and "can you ship to Canada". For a deeper comparison of options, see our guide to Instagram auto reply tools.
What Should You Say in a DM Reply?
Short, specific and useful beats polished. A few patterns that work for business accounts:
- Acknowledge, then answer. "Thanks for asking! Yes, the blue one is back in stock in sizes S to L. Want me to send the link?"
- Answer the question you were asked first. Put the link or the number in the first two lines, then add context.
- Ask one question at a time. "Which city are you in?" gets answers. A list of five questions gets silence.
- Offer a next step. "Reply BOOK and I will send the calendar link."
- Use the person's name if their profile shows it.

How Does a Business Automate DM Replies With FlowGent?
Saved replies still need a person to be at the keyboard. Once DMs arrive in volume, many businesses connect a tool that answers through Meta's official Instagram API.
FlowGent works this way. It can reply to keywords in DMs, send a DM when someone comments a keyword on a post or Reel (comment-to-DM), and, on plans with AI, answer open questions using content you have provided, with a human handoff when a person needs to step in. Starter is $19/month for flows without AI, Hobby is $49/month with an AI agent, and there is a 7-day free trial.
Automation does not replace you. It handles the repeatable questions so your own replies go to conversations that need a person. See the Instagram DM automation guide for how to set it up safely. Contacts, tags and pipeline stages sit in FlowGent's Instagram DM CRM.
