Instagram DM Link: How to Make a "Send Me a Message" Link (ig.me)

An Instagram DM link is a web address that opens a direct message conversation with a specific account instead of its profile. Paste it into an email, a website, a QR code or a bio, and whoever taps it lands in a chat with you, ready to type.

The official version is called an ig.me link. According to Meta's developer documentation{:target="_blank"}, ig.me is a shortened URL service operated by Meta that redirects people to a conversation in Instagram. If the person has never messaged you, they land in a new thread. If they have, they land in the existing one.

No app, no plugin, no signup. If you only want the link, our free Instagram DM link generator builds it from your username.

The format is simple. Meta documents it like this:

https://ig.me/m/YOUR_USERNAME

Replace YOUR_USERNAME with your Instagram handle, without the @ sign. For @flowgent.ai the link is https://ig.me/m/flowgent.ai. Meta's Instagram Platform documentation also shows a shorter form, https://ig.me/YOUR_USERNAME, but /m/ is the one on the Instagram Messaging feature page, so use that.

  1. Open your profile and read your exact username. Still choosing a handle? The free Instagram handle generator can suggest options.
  2. Type https://ig.me/m/ followed by the username, keeping dots and underscores as they appear.
  3. Copy the full address, including https://.
  4. Send it to yourself in a message and tap it.

The Instagram DM link generator does the same thing with a copy button.

One note on account types. Meta documents ig.me links as part of its messaging tools for Instagram professional accounts (business and creator). I could not find Meta documentation on how the link behaves for a personal account, so test it before printing it on anything.

Test every link before it goes into a bio, an email campaign or a printed flyer.

  1. Use a phone with the Instagram app. This is what most people will have. The link should open a chat with your account.
  2. Test from an account that has never messaged you, then from one that already has a thread. The first-time and returning experiences differ.
  3. Expect desktop to behave differently. Meta states that ig.me links are not supported on Instagram Web. When I requested an ig.me/m link from a desktop command line, it redirected to an instagram.com address, so computer users may not get a ready-to-type chat. Plan placements around phones.
  4. Read the notice. Instagram tells people they opened the conversation from a link and that your account will see they used it once they send a message. That is normal.

If the link opens your profile instead of a chat, the usual causes are a typo, a desktop browser or an old app. Meta's referral documentation mentions iOS and Android app versions 235 and above, so ask the tester to update.

Meta's documentation suggests QR codes on packaging, a Contact Us page, email newsletters and SMS. These placements work for most accounts:

  • Your website's contact page. Offer "Message us on Instagram" next to email and phone.
  • Email signatures and newsletters. A "DM me" link beats asking people to search for your handle.
  • QR codes. Meta mentions QR codes on packaging, in stores and on out-of-home ads. Our Instagram QR code generator turns your DM link into a code. Test the printed code on two or three phones before a print run.
  • Your profile link. Use the ig.me link as your profile link if you want visitors to start a chat rather than visit a site. Our Instagram bio ideas with DM calls to action go well with it.
  • Stories. Add it with a link sticker (see how to add a link to an Instagram Story) and tap your own sticker on a phone first.
  • Ads. Meta also has a native click-to-message ad format. It is a separate mechanism from ig.me, but it solves the same problem inside Meta's ad tools.

Put the link where someone has already decided to talk to you, such as under a product photo, rather than in a footer. If you sell through DMs, see how to sell on Instagram in 2026.

A lot of people searching "send me link" are not looking for ig.me at all. They saw a creator write something like "comment LINK and I will send it to you" under a Reel, and they want to know what happens next.

That flow is a different thing from an ig.me link:

  1. A creator posts a Reel or post and asks viewers to comment a keyword.
  2. When someone comments the keyword, the creator (or an automation tool) replies privately in DMs with the link.
  3. The viewer opens their Instagram inbox and finds the message.

Meta supports step 2 through what it calls private replies. Per Meta's private replies documentation{:target="_blank"}, an app can send a private reply to a commenter within 7 days of the comment, and only one message can be sent to that commenter. The reply lands in the person's inbox if they follow the account, or in their Requests folder if they do not. Follow-up messages can only be sent if the person responds, and within 24 hours of that response.

If someone sent you an Instagram link and you are wondering where it came from, check your message requests. Our guide to Instagram message requests explains where those messages sit and how to open them safely.

  • No Instagram Web support. Meta states ig.me links are not currently supported on Instagram Web.
  • The person needs the app and an account. Someone without an Instagram account cannot message you through it.
  • Message requests apply. If the person does not follow you, Instagram's Help Center says their message goes out as a request and can only contain text until accepted.
  • Referral tracking has requirements (next section).
  • Meta can change this. The documentation was updated in mid-2026. Retest your links every few months.

The link does not remove Instagram's sending rules. The Help Center says people who keep sending after a warning may be blocked from sending more direct messages for a period. A DM link is an inbound tool: people start the chat. If you plan to message many people back, read our guide to Instagram DM limits.

Meta documents one tracking mechanism, the ref parameter:

https://ig.me/m/YOUR_USERNAME?ref=YOUR_LABEL

Meta says it can be used to track different links in different channels, tie an Instagram user to a session or account in an external app, or direct the user to specific content. Useful labels would be bio, newsletter-oct or packaging-qr.

The rules, from Meta's documentation:

  • The value is a string up to 2,083 characters, using only letters, numbers, hyphens, underscores and equal signs.
  • Instagram passes it to your server through a webhook, so a developer or a messaging tool built on Meta's official API has to receive it. For how webhooks and replies work, see our how the Instagram Messaging API works.
  • For brand-new conversations, your Instagram experience must have Icebreakers configured to receive the parameter. Icebreakers are the suggested questions people see in a new chat.
  • For existing conversations, your webhook must be subscribed to the messaging_referral event.
  • The connected Instagram account must be published (live) to receive it for all users.

You can add ?ref= to any link yourself, but unless something on the receiving end reads it, you will not see a report. Meta describes delivery through webhooks, not a report inside the app. Without a messaging tool, a simpler approach is a different greeting per placement.

I would not rely on pre-filled message text. Some guides mention it, but Meta's ig.me documentation does not describe one.

The real ig.me domain is operated by Meta, so a correctly spelled link from a brand you know is fine. The risk is lookalikes. Short links hide where they lead, and scammers use them.

  • Read the whole address. It should be exactly ig.me, not ig-me.com or igme.link.
  • Be suspicious of any link that asks you to log in or reset your password. Instagram's Help Center says emails from Instagram only come from @mail.instagram.com.
  • Treat an unsolicited ig.me link in a text like any other unsolicited link.

If you publish ig.me links, label them ("Message us on Instagram") instead of showing a bare short link.

An ig.me link gets people into your inbox. It does not answer them. If three people tap it from your newsletter in the evening and you reply the next morning, you have a fast channel with a slow response. If you reply by hand, see how to reply to Instagram DMs for saved replies and the professional inbox.

Businesses solve this with automation on Meta's official messaging API. FlowGent is one option:

  • Keyword replies. When a DM contains a word like "price" or "link", FlowGent sends the reply you set up.
  • Comment-to-DM. When someone comments a keyword under a Reel or post, FlowGent sends a private reply with your link.
  • AI replies. On Hobby and above, an AI agent trained on your content answers open questions, with human handoff.

One limit: FlowGent does not currently read the ref parameter from ig.me links, so it will not route conversations by link label. It handles the reply, whichever way the person arrived.

Starter is $19/month (flows such as comment-to-DM and keyword replies, no AI), Hobby is $49/month with the AI agent, and there is a 7-day free trial. See the Instagram DM automation guide or the comment-to-DM workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ig.me link?

An ig.me link is a short URL operated by Meta that opens a direct message conversation with an Instagram account. The documented format is https://ig.me/m/ followed by the username. If the person has chatted with the account before, the link opens that existing thread. Otherwise it opens a new one.

How do I make a send me a message link on Instagram?

Type https://ig.me/m/ and add your Instagram username without the @ sign. Copy it, then test it on a phone with the Instagram app. You can also use a link generator to avoid typos. Meta documents this feature for professional accounts, so test the link if you have a personal account.

Does an ig.me link work on desktop?

Not fully. Meta states that ig.me links are not currently supported on Instagram Web. People on a computer may be sent to an Instagram web page instead of a ready-to-type chat. Design your placements around phones, and add an email or contact form for desktop visitors.

Can I track clicks on my Instagram DM link?

Meta documents a ref parameter you can append, such as ?ref=newsletter. Instagram passes the value to your messaging app through a webhook, so a tool or developer must receive it. Meta describes delivery through webhooks rather than an in-app report, and brand-new conversations need Icebreakers configured.

Why did I get a message from a link on Instagram?

You were probably sent a DM link, or you commented a keyword and an account replied privately. If you do not follow the sender, the message may sit in your message requests. Open it carefully, and do not log in anywhere because of a link in a DM.

Does an ig.me link bypass Instagram's message limits?

No. The link only starts a conversation from the visitor's side. Instagram's Help Center says it limits messages to stop unwanted ones such as spam, and accounts that keep sending after a warning may be blocked for a period. Replying to people who contacted you first is the safest pattern.
