How Do You Add a Link to an Instagram Story?
You add a link to an Instagram Story with the link sticker. The old swipe-up link is gone, and the sticker replaced it. When someone taps the sticker, Instagram sends them to the URL you attached.
Here are the steps, based on Instagram's own announcement of the feature:
- Open the Instagram app and capture or upload the photo or video for your Story.
- Tap the sticker tool in the top navigation bar.
- Tap the Link sticker.
- Paste or type your URL, then tap Done.
- Place the sticker on your Story, like any other sticker. Resize it with two fingers and drag it where you want it.
- Share the Story.
That is the whole process. The only thing that trips people up is finding the sticker in the tray. Instagram also notes in its stickers help page that not all stickers are available to everyone, and that you should update the app if a sticker is missing.
A few practical tips before you post:
- Use a link that opens fast on mobile. Most people will tap it on a phone, so test the page yourself first.
- Shorten messy URLs. Long tracking strings look suspicious. Use a clean page URL or a short link you control.
- Give people a reason to tap. A sticker with no context just sits there. Say what is behind it in the Story itself.

Who Can Use the Instagram Story Link Sticker?
Since October 2021, Instagram has offered the link sticker to all accounts. Before that, the feature was limited to verified accounts or accounts with a certain number of followers. You do not need a minimum follower count anymore, and you do not need a business account.
There are two exceptions Instagram calls out in the same announcement:
- New accounts do not get access to the link sticker.
- Accounts that repeatedly share content that violates the Community Guidelines, such as hate speech or misinformation, lose access.
The sticker also only works in organic Stories. According to Instagram's help article about link stickers, Stories ads use a default call-to-action sticker instead, which Instagram places automatically at the bottom of the ad. And you cannot create partnership ads from a Story that already has an organic link sticker.
How Do You Customize the Link Sticker Text and Color?
By default Instagram shows a shortened version of your URL on the sticker. You can change what it says.
After you paste your URL on the link screen, look for the Customize sticker text option underneath the field. Type your own call to action, for example "Get the free guide" or "Book a spot". Walkthroughs such as Rival IQ's guide to the link sticker show this exact option, and it is the single best change you can make, because a plain domain name tells viewers nothing.
For the look of the sticker, Instagram says you can tap on the sticker after placing it to cycle through color variations. Pick the one that has the most contrast with your background.
Good sticker text is short and specific:
| Weak | Better |
|---|---|
| mysite.com/p/48291 | Read the full recipe |
| Click here | Get the price list |
| Link | See the 3 open spots |
Instagram changes this screen from time to time. If your version looks different, the idea stays the same: URL first, readable text second.
How Do You Track Taps on Your Story Link?
Instagram counts taps on your link sticker and shows them in your Story insights. According to Instagram's help article on Story insights, the Interactions metric includes actions like replies, shares, sticker taps and link taps. You need a public account (personal or professional) to see insights, and insights stay available for up to two years even though the Story itself expires after 24 hours.
To check a Story:
- While it is live, open your Story and swipe up or tap to view its insights.
- For older Stories, open your insights from your profile and find the Story in your content list.
- Look at interactions and compare link taps with total views.
Divide link taps by Story views to get a rough tap rate for that frame. Compare frames against each other, not against other accounts. The point is to learn which wording, placement and offer gets people to act.
One honest limit: insights tell you how many people tapped. They do not show you a list of who tapped. If you need to know who is interested, you need another route, which we cover below.
For clicks that matter, send people to a URL you can measure on the other side, such as a page with your own analytics or a link with UTM parameters. Instagram's tap count and your site's visit count will rarely match exactly, and that is normal.
Why Is There No Link Sticker on My Story?
If the Link sticker does not appear in the tray, work through this list:
- Update the app. Instagram's own advice for missing stickers is to make sure the app is on the latest version.
- Check your account age and standing. Per Instagram, new accounts and accounts with repeated Community Guidelines violations do not get the link sticker. If you think a restriction was applied by mistake, use the account status and appeal options in the app.
- Make sure you are creating a Story, not a Reel. Instagram notes that not all stickers are available for Reels.
- Check your region. Instagram's stickers help page notes that sticker features may be unavailable in Japan and in countries located in Europe.
- Log out and back in, or reinstall. It is the boring fix, but it clears stale app state.
If none of this works, contact Instagram support through the in-app help option. We cannot see your account, so we cannot say which of these applies to you.
Why Do Story Links Get So Few Taps?
Almost every account sees the same pattern: lots of Story views, a small number of link taps. We are not going to quote a benchmark here, because Instagram does not publish a standard tap rate and the numbers floating around the internet are rarely sourced. What we can say is why the gap exists.
- The sticker is small and easy to ignore. Viewers are tapping through quickly. A tiny sticker in a corner does not register.
- Stories move on fast. Each frame is on screen for a few seconds. If the viewer has not decided by then, the next frame is already loading.
- Tapping a link means leaving Instagram. That is a bigger ask than a like or a reply, so it needs a clear reason.
- There is nothing to do first. People tap links when they already want the thing. A link with no context asks for trust before it has earned any.
What helps:
- Put the sticker in the middle area of the frame, large enough to read.
- Use a frame that explains the offer in one line, then a second frame with the sticker.
- Write sticker text that names the benefit, not the destination.
- Use one link per Story sequence, not three competing ones.
- Add an arrow or a "tap here" cue in the design, since the sticker itself is easy to miss.
- Post when your followers are online. Our best time to post guide shows how to find your own window.
- Keep the sticker and any text inside the Story safe zone. Our Instagram Story size guide has the dimensions and safe zones.
Even with all of that, you are asking for a lot from a viewer who is mid-scroll. Which brings us to a different approach.
Can People Reply to Your Story and Get the Link in a DM?
Yes, and it often fits how people use Stories better than a sticker does. Replying to a Story takes one tap and one word. Opening a link takes a decision to leave the app. (An Instagram Note can also prompt replies that arrive as DMs.)
The pattern looks like this:
- Your Story says: "Reply LINK and I will send you the guide."
- The viewer replies "LINK" to your Story.
- You (or an automation) answer in the DM with the link.
Done by hand, this works until you have more than a handful of replies. That is where automation helps. FlowGent is an Instagram DM automation tool built on the official Instagram API from Meta. In FlowGent you can build a flow that starts when someone replies to your Story, either any Story or one specific Story, and then sends the person a DM with your link. The same flow can ask a follow-up question first, so you know who is interested and what they want before you send anything.
A few things to know before you try it:
- Instagram opens a conversation when the person replies. Per Meta's messaging API documentation, conversations begin when a person sends you a message, and your app can send a message only after that, within the standard messaging window (24 hours for most actions).
- You need a professional Instagram account (Business or Creator) to connect any official-API tool. We explain this in our guide to switching to a business account on Instagram.
- It is not free. FlowGent's Starter plan is $19 per month for flows (comment-to-DM and keyword replies, no AI) and includes a 7-day free trial. Plans with an AI agent start higher. See pricing for the current numbers.
If you want to keep it simple, the link sticker is free and perfectly fine for occasional links. If you post Stories to drive people toward a specific offer and want to know who raised their hand, a DM flow gives you that. For more on how DM flows work, read our guide to Instagram DM automation and how comment-to-DM workflows handle the same idea for posts.
You can also point the sticker itself at a DM. Our free Instagram DM link generator creates an ig.me link that opens a chat with your account. Test that link on your own account before putting it in a Story, since in-app link handling can vary. Our guide to the ig.me send me a message link explains how those links work, and the free Instagram QR code tool can turn the same link into a code for print.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add a clickable link to an Instagram Story?
Create your Story, tap the sticker tool in the top bar, choose the Link sticker, paste your URL and tap Done. Place the sticker on the frame and share. Viewers who tap it are taken to your URL. It works for any account, with the exceptions Instagram lists for new accounts and repeat rule violators.
Do I need 10,000 followers to add a link to my Story?
No. The 10,000-follower rule belonged to the old swipe-up link. Since October 2021, Instagram has offered the link sticker to all accounts, whatever their size. The exceptions Instagram lists are new accounts and accounts that repeatedly break the Community Guidelines.
Can I add more than one link to a Story?
Instagram's help article does not state a limit on link stickers per frame, so we cannot confirm one. A safer approach is one link per frame, which keeps the call to action clear. If you have several links, spread them over separate frames or use a landing page that lists them.
Can I add a link to an Instagram Story on desktop?
We could not confirm the link sticker on Instagram's desktop site against Instagram's own help pages, so we recommend creating Stories in the mobile app, where the sticker tray is documented. Check Instagram's current help pages if you need desktop publishing.
How do I see how many people tapped my Story link?
Open your Story insights and look at the Interactions metric, which includes link taps. Instagram keeps Story insights for up to two years. You see counts, not a list of the people who tapped.
How can I get the link to people without them leaving Instagram?
Ask viewers to reply to the Story with a keyword, then send the link in a DM. An automation tool such as FlowGent can send that DM when a Story reply comes in. The person never has to hunt for the sticker, and you start a conversation you can follow up on.
