Why Are Your Instagram DMs Not Working?

"Instagram DMs not working" covers several different problems. Answer three questions first. They take a minute and tell you where to look.

  1. Is it everyone or one person? If messages fail for everyone, suspect your app, your connection or a sending restriction. If only one person is affected, suspect something between the two accounts, such as a block or message request rules.
  2. Does it work elsewhere? Open instagram.com in a mobile browser or on a computer and try the same message. If the web works and the app does not, the problem is your app or phone.
  3. Did something change? An app update, a new phone, a login from a new device or a burst of sending can each be the trigger.

Then match your symptom:

Is Instagram Down Right Now?

Sometimes the answer is yes. I could not find an official public status page for the consumer Instagram app in Meta's documentation, so use indirect signs:

  • Outage trackers such as Downdetector show whether many people are reporting problems. They are crowd reports, not official confirmation.
  • Ask someone on a different network whether they can message you.
  • If you use Meta's business APIs, Meta publishes metastatus.com{:target="_blank"}, which lists business products including Graph API and Messenger API for Instagram.

If it is a wider outage, waiting is the only fix. If nothing looks unusual, keep going.

How Do You Fix Instagram Messages Not Sending?

Work through these in order. They follow Instagram's own troubleshooting guide{:target="_blank"}, plus a few extra checks.

  1. Update the app and your phone's operating system. Instagram says to run the latest versions before other steps, and notes that some older app versions are no longer supported.
  2. Restart your phone or tablet. Instagram says to try this first.
  3. Check the connection both ways. Try Wi-Fi and mobile data. A weak connection is a common cause, and switching shows you which one is the problem.
  4. Log out and back in to refresh your session. Have your password ready.
  5. Clear the cache on Android. Open phone settings, tap Apps, tap Instagram and clear the cache (clearing data may sign you out). iPhone has no cache button.
  6. Uninstall and reinstall. On iPhone or iPad, press and hold the icon, tap Remove App, then reinstall from the App Store. On Android, go to Settings, Apps, Instagram, Uninstall, then reinstall from Google Play. Instagram says your photos and profile info stay saved.
  7. Try the web. Send the message from instagram.com so people waiting on you get an answer.

Still stuck on "sending" or "failed to send"? Do not keep tapping retry. If a sending limit is the cause, retrying will not fix it. Go to the limit section below.

Why Are Your Instagram Messages Not Loading?

A blank inbox, spinning circles or empty chats usually point to loading or filtering rather than sending. Check these:

  • Messages are in a different folder. Messages from people you do not follow arrive as message requests, and unwanted ones may sit in Spam. Open Messages, tap Requests, and look at Spam too. Our guide to Instagram message requests has the steps. Replies to a note on Instagram land in your inbox too.
  • You have a professional account. The inbox has Primary, General and Requests. Meta's developer documentation says replying through a third-party app moves the conversation to General. If you are unsure which account type you have, see Instagram business vs creator accounts.
  • A connected tool is involved. Access for Meta Business Suite and other apps is controlled in Profile, Menu, Messages and story replies, Message requests, Connected tools. If it is off, other apps cannot see your messages.
  • The app is out of date or buggy. Update, restart and test on the web.
  • Your connection is poor. Test another network.

If chats fail to load only on one phone, log in on a second device. If they load there, the issue is local to the first phone.

Why Won't Instagram Let You Message One Person?

When only one person is affected, the cause is usually between the two accounts:

  • You are a stranger to them. A message to someone who does not follow you is sent as a request and can only contain text. Photos, videos and voice notes wait until they accept.
  • They control who can message them. People can choose whether requests reach their request folder or whether they receive them at all.
  • There is a block. Instagram says accounts you have blocked cannot send you message requests or add you to groups.
  • Group settings. Instagram lets people choose who can add them to groups, which can send group chats to requests.

You cannot see another person's privacy settings, and Instagram does not tell you when a message is filtered on their side. If your message shows as sent and they do not reply, it may be in their requests or Spam. If the problem is replying to a message you received, see replying to a DM on Instagram.

Is It a Message Limit or an Account Restriction?

If messages fail for everyone, you recently sent a lot, or you see a warning that you cannot do something right now, you may be hitting a sending limit or a restriction.

What Instagram officially says is short. Its Help Center states that it limits direct messages people may not want, like spam. If you were warned about sending too many and continue, you may not be able to send more direct messages for a period of time. It publishes no daily number. Figures you see online are estimates and differ widely. Our article on Instagram DM limits covers the reported ranges. New accounts with little history tend to be treated more cautiously, but that is a reported pattern, not an official rule.

What to do:

  1. Stop sending. Do not retry in a loop or switch tools to push messages through.
  2. Wait. Instagram says a block on sending lasts for a period of time, and gives no duration.
  3. Check Account Status. Go to Profile, Menu, then Account Status under More info and support. Instagram says it shows removed content and, under Features you can't use, features you can no longer use, with a way to resolve or appeal.
  4. Look for unusual logins. Instagram temporarily limits some security and account settings after a login from an unrecognized device or browser. Use a device you normally use.
  5. Resume at a lower pace, replying to people who contacted you first.

What If You Use a Tool to Send or Automate DMs?

If messages stopped working after you connected a tool, the type of tool matters more than the volume.

Official API tools. Meta provides a messaging API for Instagram professional accounts (see our Instagram Messaging API guide for permissions and rate limits). Tools built on it connect through a login flow you approve and work under Meta's rules. An app can reply to a DM within the standard messaging window (24 hours for most user actions), with a separate 7-day window for human agent replies. A private reply to a comment must go out within 7 days of the comment, only one message can be sent to the commenter, and follow-ups need the person to answer first. Meta also states rate limits per professional account, for example 100 calls per second for text messages and 750 calls per hour for private replies to comments on posts and reels.

If an official tool fails to send, the usual reasons are a closed messaging window or an expired connection. Reconnect the account, then check the tool's logs. If you built your own workflow, for example in n8n, the usual cause is an access token that was not refreshed within 60 days; our n8n Instagram DM automation guide covers the token refresh step.

Unofficial tools. Bots that ask for your Instagram password, simulate taps or drive the app from a browser are a different category. Instagram's Terms of Use prohibit accessing or collecting information in an automated way without Meta's permission, and its Help Center lists automating access and using an app or service in unauthorized ways among the reasons an account can be flagged and restricted. They tend to break after app updates and put your account at risk.

If you used one and DMs stopped working:

  1. Stop using it.
  2. Remove its access: Profile, Menu, Website permissions, Apps and websites, Active, then Remove next to the app.
  3. Change your password and turn on two-factor authentication.
  4. Check Account Status, then wait before sending again and resume manually at a low pace.

For what is safe, see our guide to Instagram DM automation.

When Should You Report the Problem to Instagram?

If you have updated, restarted, switched networks, reinstalled and tested on the web, and DMs still fail with no limit or restriction notice, report it. Instagram's Help Center asks for your device, what you were doing and a screenshot.

  • Shake your phone, tap Report a problem and follow the steps.
  • Through settings: Profile, Menu, Help (under More info and support), Report a Problem.

How Does FlowGent Fit In?

FlowGent is on the official side of that list. It connects to your Instagram professional account through Meta's login flow and sends comment-to-DM private replies, keyword replies and, on plans with AI, AI agent replies, with human handoff when a person is needed. Meta's rules limit official tools to conversations people start, through a DM or a comment, so FlowGent is not a cold outreach or mass messaging tool.

If your account is restricted or a messaging window has closed, FlowGent cannot send either. That comes from Meta's rules.

Starter is $19/month for flows without AI, Hobby is $49/month with the AI agent, and there is a 7-day free trial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my Instagram DMs not working?

Common causes are an outdated app, a poor connection, a temporary Instagram issue, a message request or block between you and one person, or a sending limit after you messaged many people. Update the app, restart your phone, test Wi-Fi and mobile data, and try instagram.com.

Why are my Instagram messages not sending?

If a message stays on sending or fails, check your connection, update the app and restart. If it fails for everyone, you may be at a sending limit or restricted, so check Account Status under Menu. If it fails for one person only, you may be in their requests or blocked.

Why are Instagram messages not loading?

A blank inbox or a chat that will not open is usually an app, cache or connection problem. Update Instagram, restart, clear cache on Android or reinstall on iPhone, and test on the web. Also check Requests and Spam, and the General folder on a professional account.

Is there an Instagram DM limit that stops me from sending?

Yes, but Instagram does not publish a number. Its Help Center says it limits messages to stop spam, and people who keep sending after a warning may be blocked from sending more for a period. Reported figures vary by account age and history.

Can using an automation tool break my DMs?

It can, depending on the tool. Tools built on Meta's official Instagram API follow Meta's messaging rules. Bots that need your password or simulate taps conflict with Instagram's Terms of Use and can lead to restrictions. Remove suspicious apps under Website permissions.

How long do Instagram message restrictions last?

Instagram gives no fixed duration. Its Help Center says continuing after a warning may stop you sending more messages for a period of time. Check Account Status, stop sending while you wait, and return at a lower volume, replying to people who contacted you first.
