Is ManyChat Safe?
Mostly yes, with two caveats. ManyChat is a real company that connects to Instagram through Meta's official API, publishes its security certifications, and lets you leave when you want. The risks that remain are not about the tool being a scam: Meta can still flag an account for spammy automation, and Trustpilot reviewers complain about support and billing.
Here is the short verdict by risk type:
| Risk | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Is it a scam? | No | Company since 2015, Meta Business Partner, audited security controls |
| Will connecting steal my Instagram login? | Unlikely | It connects through Meta's own login flow, not by asking for your Instagram password |
| Can my account be restricted? | Possible, usually from how flows are used | Meta's spam systems judge behavior, and ManyChat says it cannot override them |
| Is my data protected? | Reasonably, per its public claims | SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, EU data storage, no data sales |
| Billing surprises? | The most common complaint | Per-contact overages, annual terms, charges after cancelling reported by users |

Is ManyChat Legit?
Yes. ManyChat has operated since 2015, describes itself as an official Meta Business Partner, and publishes third-party audit results on its security page. It is not an unknown tool that appeared last month. Legit does not mean flawless, though, and the mixed reviews below are part of the picture.
What ManyChat states publicly on manychat.com/security (checked October 19, 2026):
- Meta Business Partner: it says it goes through periodic Meta Data Use Checkups and compliance audits.
- ISO/IEC 27001 certification for its information security management system.
- SOC 2 Type II compliance, with the report available on request.
- ISO/IEC 42001 for AI management.
- PCI DSS SAQ A for payment card integrations.
These are the company's own claims, so treat them as claims. The SOC 2 report is the document to ask for if you are buying for a team with a security review process.
Is ManyChat Approved by Instagram?
It is a Meta Business Partner that uses Meta's official APIs. That is not the same as "Instagram approves every automation you build." ManyChat's own blog on this question says the partnership means it works directly with Instagram's official APIs, but that it does not control Meta's rules and cannot reinstate accounts.
Two separate things are easy to mix up:
- The tool is approved to connect. ManyChat's app has been through Meta's review, so using it is within Instagram's rules.
- Your usage is still judged. Meta's automated systems look at what you send and how fast. An approved tool can be used in ways that get flagged.
The same distinction applies to every Instagram automation tool built on the official API, including ours. Browser extensions and tools that ask for your Instagram password work differently and carry a different risk. See our guide to automating Instagram DMs for how the approved route works.
Can ManyChat Get Your Instagram Account Banned?
It can contribute to a restriction if your automation behaves like spam, but connecting ManyChat does not by itself put your account at risk. We would not promise that any tool cannot get an account flagged, and ManyChat does not either.
ManyChat's own list of common triggers, from its blog:
- Sending too many automated messages too quickly
- Aggressive public comment automation, especially copy-paste replies
- Running multiple Instagram accounts with overlapping behavior
Meta's developer documentation sets the rules the official API follows:
- You can only message after the user messages first. An app can send once an Instagram user has messaged the professional account, within a standard window that lasts 24 hours for most user actions. A separate 7-day Human Agent window exists for replies by a real person.
- Comment-to-DM is limited. A private reply to a comment can be sent only once per comment, within 7 days of the comment. Follow-up messages are only allowed if the person replies, and within 24 hours of that reply.
Staying inside those limits is what keeps a compliant flow compliant. The realistic problems come from flows that push against them:
| Behavior | Why it raises risk |
|---|---|
| Same promo text to hundreds of commenters | Looks like spam to detection systems |
| Reply bursts right after a viral post | Many messages in a short period |
| Two tools answering the same comment or DM | Duplicate sends and conflicting automations |
| Engagement bait ("comment to win") feeding a flow | Invites low-intent comments and reports |
| Messaging people who did not ask | Outside the official rules |
If an account is restricted, ManyChat says it can escalate cases to Meta but cannot reverse a restriction itself. That is worth knowing before you build a business on a single account. Our post on Instagram DM limits covers how many messages are sensible per day.
Is Your Data Safe With ManyChat?
By its public claims, yes, at the level you would expect from a mainstream SaaS vendor. From manychat.com/security and its privacy pages:
- Storage: production data is stored in AWS data centers in Frankfurt, EU.
- Encryption: TLS 1.2 and 1.3 in transit, AES-256 at rest.
- Selling data: it says it does not sell customer data or share it with third parties for their own purposes. It uses subprocessors, listed at manychat.com/legal/service-providers.
- GDPR: it offers a Data Processing Addendum and is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, with Standard Contractual Clauses as a fallback.
- Testing: annual independent penetration tests and a private bug bounty with Bugcrowd.
- Deletion: deleting your account removes personal data from active systems, with billing records kept as tax law requires. Accounts inactive for 18 months are flagged for deletion.
Your own responsibilities matter too. A ManyChat account holds your subscribers' names, Instagram handles and message history, so use a strong unique password, turn on two-factor authentication if offered, and remove team members who left.
Has ManyChat Had a Security Incident?
We found no breach of ManyChat's own platform confirmed by ManyChat or a major news outlet.
ManyChat's privacy policy says it will notify you without undue delay if a security incident puts your rights at risk. Check status.manychat.com and the vendor's security page if you need current information, and ask for the SOC 2 report if your company requires one.
What Do Trustpilot Reviews Say About ManyChat?
The score is low. On October 19, 2026, ManyChat's Trustpilot page showed a 2.1 out of 5 TrustScore from 306 reviews. Trustpilot reviews skew toward unhappy customers, so read it as a signal about what goes wrong, not as a measure of all users.
Themes in the reviews, most common first (all user-reported):
- Customer service: slow replies, difficulty reaching a human, technical issues left open.
- Billing: charges after cancelling, per-contact fees rising as an audience grows, refund disputes.
- Account problems: verification codes that did not arrive, trouble deleting an account.
- Bans and removals: a small number of reviews describe suspensions or removed accounts, some serious.
Ban reports are a minority of the reviews we read, and a review cannot tell you whether the user's flows broke Meta's rules. Billing and support complaints are the stronger pattern, which is why the next two sections are practical.
How Do You Avoid Surprise ManyChat Charges?
Know how it counts. ManyChat bills by Active Contacts: a contact counts as active when messages are sent or received through ManyChat, via automations, AI, broadcasts or the inbox, and one person counts once per month.
What ManyChat's pricing page says (checked October 19, 2026):
- Going over your plan's contact limit does not switch automations off. It charges a per-contact overage fee.
- You can set an overage threshold that caps how many extra contacts you are willing to pay for.
- Overages are billed monthly, even on annual plans.
- The headline prices are annual-billing rates. The Free plan includes 25 Active Contacts, and Essential starts at $14/month billed annually. Monthly billing costs more, so see our ManyChat pricing breakdown for both toggles.
- Annual plans cannot be downgraded or switched to monthly until the term ends.
- Paid plans require a credit card, and Essential and Pro offer a 14-day trial.
Practical protections:
- Set the overage threshold on day one.
- Put your trial end date in your calendar.
- Start monthly if you are unsure, accepting the higher monthly price, and move to annual after a quarter of real usage.
- Check the billing page after any viral post, since contact counts jump.
- Use a card you can freeze or replace if you need to stop payment.
How Do You Cancel ManyChat?
Cancel from the website, not the mobile app. ManyChat's help center says cancellation is not available through the mobile app.
Steps from its help article:
- Open your account, go to Settings, then Billing.
- Click Cancel Subscription.
- Choose a reason and add a short description, then click Next.
- Confirm with Cancel My Subscription.
If you subscribed through the iOS App Store or Android, cancel the mobile subscription in the Apple or Android subscription settings first. The pricing page also says that if it has been under 30 days since you bought a plan, you can cancel and request a refund through support.
After cancelling, take a screenshot of the confirmation, check your next card statement, and keep the confirmation email. If a charge still appears, contact support with those records.
How Do You Use ManyChat Safely?
Treat it as a checklist you run before turning a flow on.
- Connect through the official login. Do not give your Instagram password to any tool.
- Use a professional account and keep the Instagram connection to one automation tool at a time.
- Only message people who started the conversation or commented on your post.
- Vary your comment replies. Do not post identical public replies at volume.
- Test with your own account first, then a small group.
- Add a delay and a human fallback so people can reach you.
- Make the opt-out obvious, and honor it.
- Do not tie flows to engagement bait like "comment to win," which attracts low-intent comments.
- Watch the first week. Check delivery, replies and any Instagram warnings daily.
- Set the overage threshold and a billing reminder, as above.
If Instagram shows a warning, pause the flow, remove the trigger that caused it, and wait before turning it back on.
When Does a ManyChat Alternative Fit Better?
ManyChat is the standard choice for comment-to-DM funnels and multi-channel marketing. An alternative can fit better in three cases:
- Contact-based pricing worries you. If your audience spikes, per-contact billing can move your bill. Some tools charge differently.
- You need AI answers about your products or bookings and not just branching flows.
- Billing or support experience matters most and you want a free trial before paying.
If you are comparing, see our list of ManyChat alternatives. No tool removes Meta's rules, so the safety checklist above applies to any of them.
Where Does FlowGent Fit?
FlowGent is an Instagram DM automation tool that also uses Meta's official API. It offers AI agent replies, comment-to-DM automations, flows and an inbox. Plans start at $19/month for Starter, which has flows and comment-to-DM but no AI. AI plans start at $49/month. There is a 7-day free trial, and the free plan does not include going live or comment-to-DM.
What FlowGent does not change: it follows the same Meta rules, so spammy flows can be flagged on FlowGent too. It is a smaller product than ManyChat, with fewer channels and integrations. If you want to compare, the FlowGent vs ManyChat page shows both side by side.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ManyChat safe to use with Instagram?
Generally yes. It connects through Meta's official API and Meta's own login, not by asking for your Instagram password. The remaining risk is behavioral: bursts of identical messages or comment replies can trigger Meta's spam detection, whichever tool sent them.
Is ManyChat a scam?
No. It has operated since 2015, is a Meta Business Partner according to its own security page, and publishes certifications such as SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. The complaints against it concern support and billing, not fraud.
Can I trust ManyChat with my customer data?
By its public claims, reasonably. It stores production data in the EU, encrypts data in transit and at rest, and says it does not sell customer data. Ask for the SOC 2 report if you need to verify.
Why is ManyChat's Trustpilot score so low?
On October 19, 2026, it was 2.1 out of 5 from 306 reviews. User-reported themes were support, charges after cancellation and per-contact pricing. Trustpilot attracts unhappy customers, so treat it as a list of what to check, not a final verdict.
Is ManyChat legitimate for small businesses?
Yes. A free plan covers 25 Active Contacts, which is enough to test. Before upgrading, set the overage threshold and check which billing toggle you are on.
How do I cancel ManyChat without being charged again?
Go to Settings, Billing and click Cancel Subscription on the website. Confirm all three steps, cancel any mobile-store subscription separately, and check your next statement. Under 30 days from purchase, you can request a refund via support.
Is ManyChat safe on a personal Instagram account?
ManyChat needs an Instagram professional account to use the official messaging API. Switch to one before connecting, and decide whether you want automation tied to a personal profile.
